We had the good fortune of connecting with Talia Tucker L’Whor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Talia Tucker, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Talia Tucker L’Whor is an entity based in humor, confidence and laughing at one’s self; essentially three qualities that are so important to living a joyful life. Whenever I start a show my goal is to bring the audience into a realm of using humor to be a light in the difficult drudgery of day to day life. How do you laugh at yourself, each other, and the foolishness of the world. It is my general perspective that life lacks luster without the joy of entertainment, I believe it is entertainment that allows us to continue trudging through the most painful pieces of existence.
With that in mind I believe the success of my brand is bringing my point of view to shows with a brand of humor and professionalism that people can participate in. As a drag performer one of the biggest errors is to believe that our time on stage is about our own experience, while that is important the most important thing is the audience’s experience. My shows are about engagement, how can I engage and entertain by using the audience as parts of my show rather than a passive viewer.
I started drag nearly 6 years ago but my career did not start taking off until the end of the pandemic because I realized that there are so many talented incredible performers working in the queer bars/clubs. So I decided to outsource and bring my unique brand to more ally venues such as cocktail bars, breweries, museums, etc. I’m so gracious that Drag is apart of the mainstream in a way that these venues are open to queer entertainers putting on shows, but this has allowed me to grow my brand more than would be possible in the talent saturated queer venues.
The success of my brand can be boiled down to
1. A Unique POV
2. Audience Engagement
3. Building a Market outside of the norm
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Talia Tucker L’Whor is a fashion clown and glamour egg. I’m a camp glam gal with a humorous point of view. I’m a bald performer who loves dramatic movie characters, rhinestones, and laughing at herself. Going to a Talia Tucker L’Whor show is listening to the obscenely creative ways that she talks about s*x, relationships, and swirling craziness of the queer community. Two thing that sets me apart from others are my shows always includes the audience as a part of entertainment, and I’m always thinking of the new unique way to bring Drag to the forefront. I run Murder Mysteries, I host costume contests, I produce Meow Wolf events with the house of L’Whor, I’m always looking for the new perspective to present that multitudinous talents of Drag artists.
Getting here required a degree of delusional confidence, the blind belief that even if no one is throwing you a bone and you feel like your content is screaming into the social media void, your work is talented, valuable, and deserves to be seen. When I listen to famous performers share their “breakthrough moment” it’s less their talent is so exceptional everyone immediately flocks to them but more a they kept their level of creativity consistent and someone with a platform noticed them. So maintaining the hustle and focus on producing because it fulfills you comes first and people noticing you will come second.
Talia is not the most filtered entity and is known for pushing social comfort boundaries as a way to really look at what parts of us we should be laughing at. I’d like my brand to be remembered by its creativity, its foolishness, and its hunger for the joy of life and performing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Cocktails: Middleman or Sidepony
Breweries: Cerebral, Avery, Ratio, Odell
Queer Friendly Outting: Honor Farm, Milk Bar
Gay Parties: Yes Please, Play HAUS
Eating: Zaika Express
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Every chance I get in articles I like to shout out the people that gave me working opportunities and guidance in drag when I started as a young queen. Jessica L’Whor my drag mother and drag fairy god mother, Daniella DeCoteau one of the first people to do my makeup, Zenon TeaVee and Zarah Misdemeanor for giving me some of my earliest show opportunities, and as always Middleman the bar for giving me the chance to produce my Murder Mystery show. My Murder Mysteries has proven to be the staple of my brand and Middleman was the only location that gave me a chance to grow and develop this business.
