We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamara Solomson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamara, how do you think about risk?
Owning a business always comes with a risk. In entertainment production there is typically more at stake but I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. One day is never the same as the next. The challenges are just part of what keeps things interesting. There isn’t a day that goes by where I haven’t learned something.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve spent many years in all facets of production including film, television, theater, and live show. I have owned and operated two production companies, but I still think of myself as more of an artist or creative. Having the opportunities in the field that I’ve had hasn’t come easy. I never knew where my next paycheck was coming from and as the saying goes “you’re only as good as your last show” there was always the pressure of knowing we were all replaceable. The thing that sets me apart is my ability to understand the business side of things. The two go hand-in-hand and that’s where a lot of people struggle or fail. My advice to anyone trying to make it, is to absolutely learn to get comfortable talking to clients about money and know your worth. Knowing the value of your work doesn’t mean you can charge as much as a seasoned professional but undercutting or devaluing yourself will only lead to difficult, unappreciative clientele.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve recently moved out to an area that’s sort of a sleepy beach town until the summer months. If anyone comes to town they’ll be in for a much different experience. There are hidden gems throughout all of the small towns that make up the nearly 560 miles of pristine coastline. The seafood is typically rated some of the best in the world and the local playhouse’s offer intimate yet incredible performances. After dinner and a show, we could walk down the pier into town where during the season there is no shortage of shops and bars to stop off for a cocktail with and ocean view. While it’s not the typical city tour like the, it’s truly one of the most unique places to visit.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I believe we all have people in our lives who support us and doubt us. Both have played an equal role in who I am today. The people who have helped or supported me know who they are. The list is too long, but I am always grateful for each and every one.
