We had the good fortune of connecting with Tara Barney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tara, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is customer service.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is simple and joyful and speaks to the inner child in everyone. I think what sets me apart from others is that I don’t follow trends in the art world. I put a bit of my heart into each of my pieces. I got where I am today professionally by taking workshops from artists I admire. I started small by creating handcrafted jewelry and worked up to painting large pieces and writing and illustrating my first children’s book. The biggest challenge to overcome was myself. I have a brain disorder and once I received treatment for that and worked on my issues in therapy, I grew as a person and became confident in myself. One lesson I’ve learned is that people want to talk to me in person when they buy a piece of jewelry, art or one of my books. I have much better sales when I meet people in person than I do through a gallery or online. I want people to know my Red Door Creations brand is a home based business which focuses on quality, handcrafted items and the work I do through my paintings and children’s book is original. Nothing I do is digital.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d spend a week with my best friend exploring Poudre Canyon west of Fort Collins, Co. We would go tubing and kayaking down the Poudre and we would hike up to Greyrock Mountain. We would eat at Mishawaka Amphitheater and see some live music. We would check out the moose, big horn sheep and elk at Forest State Park. I’ve had hip and back surgery, so I wouldn’t be able to camp out on the ground but we could use a small camper and make most of our own meals. A week spent relaxing and hearing the sounds of nature would be so good for my soul!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Andrew, is to whom I want to dedicate my success. I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am today without his support, critiques, love and encouragement.
