We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylen Cameron and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylen, how does your business help the community?
My business, Sattva Doula Company, is all about helping my immediate community, and therefore, the world as a whole! I am deeply passionate about creating accessible and affordable birthing support here in the Roaring Fork Valley where there is a hyper focus on capitalizing off the most wealthy, while the masses who make up the majority are often overlooked. As a birth and postpartum doula, I am dedicated to providing the highest level of care for all of my clients. I am working on changing the obtainability of these much needed, sacred services so that all families can be aided on the path of pregnancy and beyond.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets my business apart from others is the focus I have on holistic health and intentional practices. I am an advocate for body autonomy in the birth place. My Ayurvedic background gives me a basket of tools that make me unique in this field. These tools help me create an environment for families and their babies to flourish. I am proud to say that I have taken the dive into full self employment with the deep belief that this is my true calling. It can be intimidating to start a small business in this economy. It has not always been easy, but it has always been fulfilling. I have overcome challenges by persevering and making invaluable connections throughout the community. Reaching out to fellow birth workers for advice, joining local mom groups, and openly speaking about my profession has opened many doors even at the most unexpected times. A big lesson I have taken from my experience starting a business is that if you believe in something, talk about it! The more you get your message out and break barriers, the more you can make a change. I want the world to know that anything is possible, whether it be building a business from the ground up as a young, working-class mother or creating your ideal birth experience. You can do it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visiting, I would take them to my favorite spots. First, we would go to Iron Mountain Hot Springs. After traveling, there’s nothing better than a soothing soak in the healing mineral water. After our soak, we would go back to my place for a homemade Ayurvedic meal cooked with love and attention to my visitor’s needs. Once we have had time to relax and digest our nourishment, we would go on an adventure to the countless wonders of nature surrounding us here in the Roaring Fork Valley. Here are my top five: Rifle Falls State Park, Hanging Lake, The Maroon Bells, John Denver Sanctuary, and Thompson Creek Trail. If it’s in the cards, we would catch an outdoor concert at Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater or Dillon Amphitheater. If it were winter we would enjoy a show at the historic Belly Up or Wheeler Opera House in Aspen. We would go on a stroll of Glenwood Springs’ beautiful downtown area, adoring the Victorian homes on our way. Hoping that it is early-mid summer, we would catch a local Farmer’s Market and check out all of the artisan booths. After walking under the bridge, we would stop in to appreciate the amazing works of art made by disabled folks at Mountain Valley Weavers. Then we might stop at The Pullman for a bite to eat off their ethically sourced, seasonally rotating menu. To finish off the day, we would take an online yoga class from Shianne Wright or Sam Sheppard from the comforts of my home. Phew! What a day!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give credit to my family, teachers and colleagues. Without encouragement from my loving fiancé, Andrew, I would likely still be focusing my energy into another’s business. My daughter, Paisley, has given me extraordinary experiential wisdom, and the ability to learn through trial and error with grace. The amount of gratitude I have for my mentors is endless. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for their guidance.
