We had the good fortune of connecting with Tenisha Dunlap and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tenisha, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When I first started my business, I use to have the hustle and grind mentality. I use to work, work, work like Rihanna would say, ever weekend I was busy. But now over time, I’ve changed my mindset and now it’s grace and grind. Now, I try my best to work smarter and not harder. I haven’t mastered this but I understand that now less is more. You can actually do less and be more balanced and fulfilled when you use strategies in business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have a non-profit organization called Nariah’s Way Foundation; our mission is to help children that have lost a parent in the act of senseless gun violence. I started this organization in 2014, 2 years after the loss of Nariah’s Father. It was not easy adjusting to our “new normal” however I wanted to provide support to other children who had similar stories so that we all could heal together.
Running a non-profit organization is not easy, but we have been overcoming the challenges by trial and error and moving forward no matter what happens. The lessons that I have learned along the way; quality over quantity, meaning that even if only 1-5 people show up for a program or event, still put your best foot forward and be excellence and make an impact for those in the room. I want the world to know that God can turn your Pain into Purpose just like he did for my Daughter and I. Sometimes the hardest thing in life can be turned into your birthing season.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, I’m from a small town but I love to travel so I would plan a trip out the country to have some fun, try some new food (I am a picky eater though), and dance the night away making a lot of memories that will last forever.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this to my children, Nariah and King and my significant other Ricky, who keeps me going and motivated to continue to strive and thrive in life.
