We had the good fortune of connecting with Tierra Coxsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tierra, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
What can we do to make an impact? What kind of service is missing from the world? What are we missing in our lives? The answer is nothing- we as a whole are missing nothingness. As humans we take hardly a moment to breathe, to practice mindfulness, and to experience wholeness. Sensory deprivation therapy is a breath. A breath of peace, mindfulness, and wholesomeness, not to mention a moment to notice and embrace the human body that carries us through our busy days and supports our busy minds. For me, starting my own business is adding to the community, creating something that is authentically myself, and embracing small, woman owned businesses as part of my story. For the world, floating is a practice that betters us as people and the way we operate in the world and interact socially. We have helped people struggling with chronic pain, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, addiction, people who need more self-care in their lives, and most simply put- people who are looking to better themselves. At Radi8 Float we believe that our service should be available to everyone and have even created a donation-based day on the 8th of every month to offer our services to people coming to us for the first time who may really need what we have to offer.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Owning a sensory deprivation studio is not an easy endeavor. When you own a business, it seems like every day you discover something new and float tanks are no exception. Within the past couple of years there have been several challenges that felt like the end of this business whether it be the Covid-19 lockdown, foreign machinery breaking down, or people coming and going from our story. Perseverance is the key to any project in life, and persevering through everything that came unexpectedly was fundamental to keeping the float studio a-float. I think the passion of helping people and the passion for the service itself was the answer to every problem and the motivation towards every goal and that’s exactly why floating is so special. I would have to say I am proud of how hard I have worked to keep this place going and improving given the situation the past couple of years. It is never easy, but to me nothing is more worth it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The city of Boulder has plenty to offer. Of course, as a floating enthusiast, I am in love with the water. Wonderland Lake is one of my frequent destinations and I love hiking pretty much anywhere I am allowed to wander! I always recommend Chataqua trail and hunting for waterfalls for a morning hike. The Rayback collective is my favorite spot to grab some appetizers and drinks, but I also love Wappo’s Tacos for lunch. I also frequent several of my favorite yoga instructors. Kevin Flynn yoga is one of my favorites nearby in Longmont, as well as Lisa Reeder at Wild Souls Yoga. Charlie Mac Drury is my favorite massage therapist; I always recommend doing a massage with him if you’re visiting from out of town or if you’re local to the area. Of course, I have to add floating to the itinerary to finish of a busy day and take a second to appreciate it all, but you can’t forget desert at Boulder Baked.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to say, I have had a very challenging run with the people around me in the past couple of years. Sometimes, as a business owner, you feel like you are holding up an island and it can be very isolating. As a single woman navigating business ownership, I have to give my gratitude out to all of the powerful women who have done this before me and left the resources and wisdom that have helped me so much. With floating still being somewhat niche, people are skeptical of the service and the science behind it which has been challenging with family, friends, and clients over the years but the open-minded people that take chances on my business and the idea of floating are what keep us going and I am grateful for each and every one of them. At the moment, we are family owned and operated which has been not only one of our greatest strengths, but one of our greatest challenges. My son and daughter, Payton and Deion, have been supportive through my journey and made sacrifices for our business that I would have never anticipated. My kids’ continued support means the world to me and makes a huge impact from the business standpoint.
