We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany Latham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiffany, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Throughout my career, I’ve held numerous jobs and often felt alienated as a queer person. I felt pressured to conform to heteronormative workplace norms, from my attire to how I presented myself. This discomfort pushed me to reflect on my true career aspirations. I discovered a passion for using tools and engaging in manual labor, which led me into male-dominated fields where I continued to feel like an outsider. Starting my own business was transformative, as it allowed me to create a work environment where I could be myself. Today, I proudly employ other queer individuals, providing a supportive and inclusive workplace where everyone can feel comfortable being themselves.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In 2019, I launched Affordable Junk Removal LLC with a strong focus on community well-being, the safety of our residents, and environmental preservation.
Our goal is to responsibly manage junk disposal, recycling, and transportation within our town, offering cost-effective, dependable, and eco-conscious services.
Empowering other members of the queer community to join me on this journey has been incredibly fulfilling. Achieving equity in a predominantly male field has been both empowering and humbling.
As a woman, I often encounter skepticism about my ability to get the job done, which only fuels my determination to excel. I’ve consistently proven myself capable and have successfully completed every task I’ve undertaken.
Having expanded from Portland, OR to Denver, CO, I’m excited about the abundant opportunities Denver offers and look forward to growing our presence there.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a newcomer to Denver, I’m still discovering the best spots around town! I’m particularly fond of my neighborhood along S Broadway, which boasts a variety of shopping, dining, bars, and a grocery store all conveniently located on one strip. One of my top dining picks on S Broadway is Adrift, known for its delicious pork belly and Hawaiian-inspired cuisine.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a big thanks to my friends, family, and queer community for their tremendous support throughout my journey as a business owner. I couldn’t have done it without the encouragement of the people I care about. A special mention goes to my father, who not only helped me launch my business but also continues to guide me as a mentor.
