We had the good fortune of connecting with To Be Astronauts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi To Be Astronauts, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Eric: We’ve put ourselves into the brand and that’s what’s helped make it more successful. Max is fun-loving and funny, which works well as a front person. Sal is bombastic during his videos on social media for the band, I play the “screw it, it doesn’t matter person.” We’ve dove into recording and wanted a certain sound and then we projected that with the skull astronauts and all the space aesthetic, we’ve really backed up a spacey, fast paced rock vibe.
Kyle: We all bring something to the business side, too. Max does a lot of audio-visual, photos, and merchandise design. I coordinate and maintain relationships with promoters and bookers, Sal does writing and “voice of the band” stuff on social media. Eric does a lot on the marketing and accounting side. We kind of have a really good mix of strengths.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We’re really proud of booking shows with bands that have women and/or people of color as members. We work with Youth on Record and have connections to local organizations. We’re really proud of our reputation as a band that really loves our local community. It wasn’t easy to build our reputation, we’ve made some errors, But we’re really proud of the reputation we’ve built in the local rock scene as a responsible, fun band who puts on energetic shows. We’re also pretty proud of the way we handle our merchandise game.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whoof, here go: Lion’s Lair on East Colfax, TRVE Brewing Company, Wizard’s Chest, Mutiny Information Cafe, hanging out in Cheeseman Park, Red Rocks (not just for the venues), Chaos Bloom Theatre, Larimer from 14th to 30th.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Paul Washburn, he ran the open mic night stage at Lions Lair on Wednesday nights a few years ago and that’s really where we cut our teeth. He showed a lot of faith in us and gave us lots of opportunities to play
Tony Mason, booking and talent agent (?) for Lost Lake. Similar to Paul, Tony showed a lot of faith in us and spread the word as much as he could.
