We had the good fortune of connecting with Todd Galbate and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Todd, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
During my career in the newspaper industry, I was an employee. There was a specific time when the work day started and ended. Working on weekends was only as needed and not common.

In my current real estate career, I am self-employed. I work when needed to build a successful business. As a realtor, I am often working days, nights and weekends and 7 days a week. Much different than my career as an employee. This makes my work life balance difficult. At times when I make solid personal plans, I may not be available to clients when needed. There are no paid vacations. Days off present themselves with short notice.

In the past year, my daughter Lauren became my partner. We work together to help give each other a better work life balance. And when working extra long weeks, it’s often with my daughter which is great.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
For nearly 35 years, I was in the newspaper industry. As more and more people relied on the internet for news instead of newsprint, the industry began downsizing and struggling to communicate their relevance. I soon realized, I will not be able to retire from the newspaper industry without moving around the country for the rest of my life. I’ve always been interested in real estate. I built 3 homes and remodeled 2 basements. I knew real estate would be a part of my retirement portfolio so at 52 years old, I took a leap of faith and became a self-employed realtor. It had been a long time since I sat in a classroom, took a test or had so much research to do to advance my career. I was working around the clock to ramp up as quickly as possible. In real estate you don’t get paid until you close on a property. When you are starting out in real estate, you’re only spending when your getting started. Fast forward to today, I love what I do. My daughter is my partner and she loves it to. In my lifetime, I can’t emphasize enough how rewarding it has been to build a business from scratch that offers such an enjoyable lifestyle.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Old Town Fort Collins. It’s my playground. When I have family and friends visiting we always end up in Old Town. Some of may favorite places include; The Rio, The Social, Ace Gillette’s, Lucky Joes, The Exchange, The Sunset Lounge at the Elizabeth Hotel and the Blind Pig.

We also take guest to Estes Park to walk through town, check out the Stanley Hotel and of course Rocky Mountain National Park.

Lunch on the patio of the Mishawaka is always on our list too.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife Chris deserves a shout out. We’ve been together since high school, 40 years. We’ve supported each others careers and make time for our 3 adult children and time to for ourselves. Though my schedule is crazy now, my wife is very understanding and supportive. She also loves seeing me and my daughter working together.
