We had the good fortune of connecting with Tom Aglio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tom, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
” If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.” ~ Sir Isaac Newton. I love this quote because it perfectly describes my business. I’m extremely grateful for all of the success I’ve had with voice over, but I never want to forget where I come from and who taught me along the way. While I have come up with my own styles and ways of running my business, I have built so much off of the inspiration and innovations of the VO giants who came before me. Everything from my marketing techniques to my style of acting has been shaped in some way or form from the teachings I’ve received over the years. Success and ideas do not happen inside a vacuum. All of the great artists learn from each other and make those teachings their own, and I will forever give credit where credit is due and I will never forget who has helped me along the way.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a voice actor, which means I lend my voice to all kinds of commercials, video games, cartoons, dubs, narrations, etc. Show Business is not an easy one! However, it’s the best industry in the world. While I come from an acting background, VO was not easy for me to break into. There are a lot of technical aspects involved before you can ever really settle in and start to grow your business. My wife has always pushed me to take the situation at hand and make the most of it. Before I went full time, I used to work 9-5 in an office. I would get to work at 6:30AM and find as many leads as I could to market to. I would then schedule those emails to send throughout the day, work my 8 hours, come home, eat dinner, and then record auditions for another couple of hours before finally winding down. The hours were rough, but the hustle was worth it. Throughout it all, I made it a point to network and align myself with the right people as much as possible. All of the relationships I’ve built have been huge contributing factors in where my business is today.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh, man. I live on Long Island, about 50min from NYC. We’d probably start on Long Island and grab lunch and drinks at this place near me called “The Clubhouse.” At night, we’d go down to this pier called The Nautical Mile where there are TONS of great restaurants, food, bars, etc. I love it there. The next day, I’d say a trip to the Vanderbilt Planetarium (my wife and I love it there) since I’m a total space nerd, ending with dinner at this incredible waterside restaurant near there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Brooke and son Zachary. I could never do anything without them. They are my inspiration and my whole world, nothing else matters. The VO business is my wife and I. I just talk into the mic, she’s the brains behind the operation. I want my son to grow up and know that his daddy has worked so hard in order to give him the best life possible.
