We had the good fortune of connecting with Tom Gonnella and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tom, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I have always focused on a balance in all areas of my life – mental, emotional, financial, and physical. With these areas as a focus, my work and family life naturally was balanced along with developing myself in many positive areas.
As a younger person, I had more time dedicated to my career as I did not have a wife or children at that time. As I became older and more experienced in business, I was able to successfully migrate my time allocation to family while still achieving at a high level in business.
I highly regard life balances and espouse it to all employees in my businesses. Employees that are centered and balanced in the right areas will always be the most productive performers.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The busines I am CEO of is not necessarily my story but I do love the company. What I mean by this is that my story has been taking 3 different companies that were fledgling, and assembling the right team and motivating them to success. Two of the three firms were sold for very attractive valuations and the current one is on pace to have similar results.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Denver for me is all about outdoors and healthy activities. I also love the dining scene here so we would have lots to do. I would start with some amazing bike rides I have discovered both in the city and the mountains or doing AT skiing if it was the winter months.
I would also take them downtown to a few of my favorite restaurants and walk along Larimer street. I also enjoy Idaho Springs, Golden or Morrison whenever I finish a big ride in the hills. There are lots of great places to grab a drink and good food in these towns with the added flavor of a mountain town experience.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have had many people along the way in life contribute to my success. I have learned much from watching disastrous bosses making poor decisions or treating employees poorly, to great mentors that instill life long words and actions for me to live by in my own life.
As a young business entrepreneur and investor, Stephen Covey’s books really resonated with me and inspired me to live my life in a more balanced and thoughtful way. Even to this day, I write my goals for the coming year in all aspects of my life, not just financial or business success.
