We had the good fortune of connecting with Tréja Nicole and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tréja, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My work life balance has drastically changed since I first started my career and business with photography. In the beginning I had no boundaries. I would miss family happenings, choose working over my mental health-continuously jump through hoops for people before putting the needs of myself first. An off button did not exist. It was pretty much work is life and my life is work. What even is rest?
Now I have two phones. One for personal and the other for business so I can hold myself accountable to creating a balance between the two. When it’s no longer work time that’s when you should be tapping into other things. Like spending time with loved ones, a hobby that has no relation to work or as simple as it sounds going to sleep and actually getting the rest your body needs.
I think it’s good to find balance because at one point you will end up losing yourself if you don’t catch a grip. One thing I can say as I’m still learning how to balance the two is that if you don’t have respect for your own time others won’t either.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Portrait Photographer. I having a very diverse clientele being able to photograph a variety of categories. I specialize in Newborn photography, maternity, families and couples. I also do Birthday/Cake Smash photo shoots, Graduation portraits, Prom, Weddings, and other event coverage; as well as branding photography, photographing head shots and products.
What sets me apart is the capability of working with minimum conditions to produce excellent body of work. I don’t use much equipment during photo shoots nor do I have a physical studio but with the skillset I have developed, I have managed to create and capture images Clients have thought they can only imagine.
What makes me proud is how I’ve grown my business predominantly through word of mouth. I got to where I am today by staying persistent and having faith. I overcame challenges by taking everything as a lesson rather than a loss. Lessons I’ve learned along the way is its okay to ask for help, be prepared for the unprepared and to work with people who respect and know your worth.
Something I want people to know about me is that I don’t see photography as just something to do as a hobby or to have as a career. Being a photographer is who I am. It truly is my passion. I feel as though it is my purpose and way of giving back to others by creating images that they can always look back at.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family is my number one support system and will forever receive credit for all of my successes. Especially my Mom and Nana!
