We had the good fortune of connecting with Tycho Dwelis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tycho, how do you think about risk?
Yeah, being a self-published author and freelance artist is definitely all about taking risks. It can be tempting to stick with a stable job and a consistent paycheck, but for me, the thrill of creating something that’s truly my own is worth the uncertainty. Of course, there are sacrifices that come with that, and one of the biggest is the financial side of things – it’s tough to make a lot of money when you’re just starting out. But at the end of the day, the freedom to pursue my passions and develop new skills is priceless. And who knows? Maybe one day all of this hard work will pay off and I’ll be able to make a living doing what I love.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I always have new and exciting things going on, and I think that my drive to publish books and do art sets me apart from others, but I have a brand new project on the horizon. I am so excited to finally be launching One Pale Reflection, my newest book – a young adult isekai fantasy for readers 13 and up! This book has been a labor of love for over a decade, and I can’t wait to share it with the world. The Kickstarter campaign starting on May 11th is going to be a great opportunity to get the book into the hands of readers, and the official release date of July 1st is just around the corner. As a self-published author, I’ve put in a lot of work to make this book the best it can be, from rewriting the original version I wrote when I was 17 to designing the cover myself. It’s a challenge, but seeing the finished product makes it all worth it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would be missing a huge opportunity if I didn’t talk about Casa Bonita. I know it’s not quite open yet, but it’ll be up and running again soon! I obviously can’t say whether or not the new and improved Casa Bonita is any good, but I have faith in the new chef that has been hired and the love and care that’s being put into the reopening. Who doesn’t love cliff divers, mariachi, and Black Bart?
Because you definitely can’t eat at just Casa Bonita every day, I would also include restaurants like Coco Pirata (they have Mexican sushi and it’s the bomb), Snowl, Ding Tea, and Uchenna. As for activities, hiking, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and Meow Wolf are a must.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely would like to shout out Stephanie Gillis, author of the Ashport Archives. Stephanie is also an independent author and writes incredible contemporary fantasy books packed with mythology and folklore.
