We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyrell Osborn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyrell, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I decided it was finally time to live a life that I get to curate. My true nature doesn’t like being told when to leave for work, when to eat, when I get to go home, what my surroundings will be, etc. and my true nature definitely doesn’t like sitting in front of a computer all day. In running Seeker Creative, I see every day like a blank canvas that I get to fill with things that enrich my life. Since I’ve started my own business, I’ve gotten to paint a bunch of murals, meet some wonderful people, stay active, participate in a variety of projects, cover lots of walls with paint, delve into my own identity, and choose my daily life. The freedom and creativity are so worth the stress of running a small business!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I decided to quit my job and start my own business, I was determined to not only create a job for myself, but a new life. I purposefully didn’t have a back-up plan, because that would give me an out when things got challenging. Without a Plan B, I had to stay focused on my goals, use critical problem solving, and have faith that if I stayed on my path, things would work out.

A key to my success has been to stay narrowly focused on the creative life while also being open-minded to a wide variety of projects. I’ve painted murals on the interior of houses, around the foundation of a house, in a candle factory/café, in a yoga studio, in a small town boutique, on the streets of my town. I’ve painted the interiors and exterior of houses, every color from plain white to deep green, from Southwestern coral to metallic gold. I’ve had the pleasure of illustrating my first children’s book, honoring people I love with watercolor portraits, painting dangly wooden earrings, decorating the windows of our local museum, creating faux finishes, teaching creative workshops, transforming kitchen cabinets, decorating upcycled gym lockers, painting a picnic bench for StreetWise (a local art organization), and helping people make their creative ideas become a reality in their homes.

The variety of projects, the people I work with, and the freedom offer perpetual newness!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting from out of town, we certainly wouldn’t stay in town. I’d take them to a concert in Denver or Boulder; either the Fox Theater, Boulder Theater, The Bluebird, The Gothic, The Paramount, or if the weather was nice, Red Rocks. Before the show, we could hit my favorite restaurants depending what we’re in the mood for: Angelo’s Taverna on 6th Ave for oysters and homemade pasta or Ace Eat & Serve for Asian fusion.

Since we have a whole week, we’d check out some art at the Denver Art Museum, around Santa Fe, and murals throughout Denver. We’d also have to do the StreetWise tour of murals in Boulder after which we’d end with some delicious and affordable Thai food at Khow Thai near Arapahoe and Broadway.

We’d take a day to hike my favorite trail up near Jamestown, the Ceral St Vrain Trailhead. Afterward, we’d come back to Longmont to my favorite local hangout, Long’s Peak Pub. We could also stroll the downtown area, checking out some shops and local art.

We’d do a Front Range tour of the best thrift stores, seeking treasures in the clothing, home, and book departments.

Since most of my friends are creative also, we’d chill at home drinking some homemade chai, doing something artsy like making collages or painting some thrift finds while listening to a few Ted talks because we like to learn stuff, too.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank my friends and family who have supported my decision to start and run my business, especially my husband, Jason who believes in me fully. I have plenty of people to turn to when I need to problem solve or celebrate my creative triumphs!
