Meet Will Fowler | Overland Video Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Will Fowler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Will, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is something that plays a big role in traveling the backcountry. In some ways it’s the risk that makes the adventure exciting. But the balance of seeking out remote places, knowing that if something goes really wrong, you could be in trouble, and remembering that we’re doing this for fun, is really important to keep in mind. But if you think about it, there’s risk for not taking action too. There’s a risk that if you let complacency take hold of you, life will pass you by and you won’t participate much. So honestly, when we venture out into unknown places in this world, we’re addressing one risk by accepting another.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I make adventure travel videos that focus on off-grid exploration in my Jeep. We go to some of the most remote places in the country and film the experience. I find that every trip, every place, every adventure has a soul…and no matter how I try to capture the experience with my cameras, it’s meaningless without addressing the soul of a place. In my world that usually involves understanding the land we are exploring, the people who’ve come before us, and then how the experience changes us from the beginning of the trip to the end.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Boise, Idaho – which is still somewhat undiscovered compared to places like Utah, Colorado, and California. So there’s as much to do outside in nature as there is to do in the city. However, what makes Boise a special place is that we’re so isolated. That means I can be on a river bank with no one around for miles in about 30 minutes from my front door. So if someone were coming here to visit, I’d tell them to head up the Boise River until they get to the town of Atlanta, Idaho. It’s 60 miles up a winding dirt road that leads to a place that still embodies the pioneer spirit at the foot of the Sawtooth Mountains.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been positively influenced by so many people in my niche. Brad from Trailrecon, Shaun from The Story Til Now, Rob from Revere Overland, are just a few in a long list of inspiring creators who are dedicated to their craft and to this crazy off-road lifestyle.
