We had the good fortune of connecting with William Bravo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi William, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
starting my own business was a result of many moving parts needing a home. I have always been an entrepreneur and bad in a cubicle (at least in the 9-5 position.) My desire to become involved in the music industry was serious but I felt hindered by the cliquishness of the venues I was working at.
I realized that I needed a way to market the various skills I had acquired over the years; a music studio seemed like the best encapsulation for my potential services and products. I was inspired by larger studios like universal that have artists and engineers who dabble in every department of the entertainment industry. With the tools accessible to us nowadays. It seemed like doing something similar was not that far-fetched.
Since starting my business I’ve only expanded my network and skill-sets. My company (Schism Studios) is the most ambitious project I have started
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like to think of myself as a Jack of all trades. It all started with a guitar. From there I learned songs, started bands, studied music theory, learned about different genres, and started performing. This leads me to the real beginning of my musical career
Being a musical performer today is being a business/ brand. I found myself doing everything from booking to marketing for gigs that took me months to book in the first place (venues don’t market for you anymore.) My dream of being a rockstar was quickly rattled by the amount of work I was putting into skills that had nothing to do with music. I found this extra work interesting but it did not coincide with the endless cycles of performing and practicing that my art deserved.
This led me to a pinnacle question in my career. What kind of artist am I going to be? The Flashy headliner (like all of my childhood idols) or just one of the strategic magicians who makes it all happen? Well, I chose the latter. While I still get to perform and open for headliners sometimes, the most fulfilling part of my career has been getting to meet touring artists. The conversations I’ve had and the chance I get to work with phenomenal creatives have given me a playground of musical ideas where I get to play with those who were once my idols.
I capture these conversations sometimes on my podcast. “icantproduce a podcast” is one of my many projects that was formed out of pure love for electronic music and the people who make up the scene. It is quickly growing to be one of my most successful ideas. I believe this is because I approach my interviews with passion and genuine curiosity; something that my rockstar idols had plenty of.
Schisms Studios is about embracing the lesser-known side of yourself. Be Brave and Be Curious
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
PHO IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE SUCCESS OF MY BUSINESS. “Top Pho” is a must-go when I’m in Denver. It’s just good for the soul.
There are a lot of great people to meet in Denver. Personally, I like to check out shows at the black box, your mom’s house, and Cervantes. When a good artist is playing at one of those venues, you’re in for a fun night.
Denver is also famous for its speakeasy’s. Knew Conscious is a membership only club that I like to go to but there are so many more in town that I can’t wait to try
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I need to shoutout those who believed in me the most. The band (Stil Runnin) My business partner (Brennan Sedivy) and my friends and family who have supported me emotionally and financially. The music industry seems insurmountable at times but these people never doubted my ability to take it on.
