We had the good fortune of connecting with Buck Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Buck, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
Be humble, be hungry and always be the hardest working person in the room.
I believe this encompasses all the attributes that people want to do business with. Be a person that people want to be around and interact with, much less give their money to, be driven to own your own destiny and control your future and then turn that drive into results. Great recipe in one sentence!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I had, up to this point always been the faithful employee, that was raised right; if your not early your late, clean up at the end of the day is part of the day, and be someone people want to work with. It had worked, better at times than others, but I had earned my way up to some great leadership positions that were satisfying. Most importantly, those positions taught me so many valuable lessons. It’s so valuable to be able to recognize certain things you only get from experience. For instance, family owned businesses are great, a cornerstone of the American Dream, but working for someone who has never had to work for someone else presents its own challenges. Big corporations and all their programs and policies and procedures and people, all have something to offer if you learn to look for it and learn from it. And people, my favorite part. I believe most people who have worked with and for me will honestly say that I love to see people succeed, and I love to be a part of that success. One of my favorite managers that has ever worked for me, Martin, shares that love of people and excitement for when we get it all right. He remains a close, valued friend to this day.
My brand, I am simple, hardworking honest guy that wants to be looked at very favorably in his community and industry as someone who genuinely cares about his family, his employees and business, and with that, delivers exactly what he says he will, when he will and at a level that exceeds expectations.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Easy! Welcome to Bayfield and Durango!
First morning we are having breakfast at Baked in Bayfield, or Breda’s! Both are locally owned and they treat you like they are excited for you to be there, they fit my business model so well! Then we are going to go to Vallecito Lake and float around on the boat and do some fishing. This is where I worked my summers at the boat dock as a kid, and where I can spend any day taking in the best of what nature has to offer, it’s my happy place. That night we will go into Durango and visit any of the long time businesses there that work to cater to the tourists during the season, and to give the locals a great place to visit during the off. Some live music for sure. If it’s the season, we are catching the local high school football game for sure!!
The rest of the week would be filled with taking in all that our area has to offer, a ride on the Durango Silverton train is a must, mind blowing scenery. A trip to Purgatory for either skiing (also going to Wolf Creek!) if it’s winter, and then a full day of exploring Molas Pass on the snowmobiles to see the incredible tranquility of the mountains in the winter. Are you starting to see a theme here??
I appreciate the arts, the symphony, the ballgames; but I am most happy in nature and its wonder, I just love it.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
At the risk of getting long winded and sentimental, I’ll start with a genuine, albeit oft overused shoutout. My family, plain and simple the bedrock of where I am today, good times and bad, my wife, my dad and the boys have been there to pick me up when it all crashed, cheer me on during the hard work and high five when it all came together. Two leaders will always be pillars in my mind and heart when it comes to developing myself. Mike Nelson who stood next to me every day at the power plant and quietly and firmly reinforced my belief of common sense, self ownership and good ol fashioned hard work. That being genuine and demonstrating dedication and willingness to do your part to the very best of your ability will never fail you. And to Drew Dodds, who epitomizes the “you can do anything with hard work, dedication and care” mantra. Someone who offers help at any time and means it is so rare. Drew is who taught me the value of the “care factor” when working with clients. He lives by it, and his reviews reflect that. He also is a great example of using your tools and following the processes that lead to an organized, efficient and professional organization.
