We had the good fortune of connecting with Zach Jenkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zach, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I used to dedicate myself 110% to my profession. I was a manager at a small building supply store. I took so much pride in my work. Often, I would choose the needs of my store over my own (or my families) needs. As my children have gotten older, I’ve realized there are more important things than work. I’m making sure to spend more time with my family as well as focusing on self care. That’s a huge reason for starting the 12 Hike Podcast. It was a major mental health booster for me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I started the 12 Hike Podcast I had no real vision. I just knew I wanted to talk to interesting people involved in the outdoors. Now that I’m nearly 100 episodes in, I understand what I want. I want people to listen to my podcast and realize the outdoors shouldn’t be intimidating. It is a fun space where there is room for everyone. If you don’t know where to get started, there are people and groups out there dedicated to teaching and guiding individuals just like you. We all started somewhere and I want to give people the courage to take that first step.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Obviously going to Rocky Mountain National Park is a must. The area is gorgeous and worth a day. Some of my favorite areas are on the front range. Red Feather Lakes and the Poudre Canyon are amazing. We would spend a lot of time fishing and hiking. Also, I like taking people to Wyoming. It’s a neighbor state that is as wild as it gets.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Brad Penix, the guy that started 12 Hike, deserves so much credit. He is a friend that I’ve shared so many outdoor adventures with. He was gracious enough to invite me to grow his brand and has let me do basically whatever I want. Without him, the podcast would not exist.
