I think the biggest thing that people outside of the industry are unaware of is that it is more than just pressing a button. It is about making sure the photo tells the story you are trying to tell. Some times its even about being in the right place at the right time. Setting up and waiting for everything to align. Waiting planning and hoping for everything to go exactly the way you are hoping for to capture a moment that will be gone in a matter of a second.
