We had the good fortune of connecting with Mish Howard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mish, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was born a creative. From a young age I’ve viewed the world a little different. Beauty oozes from every crevasse of the world and I have always had a deep connection with that. it wasn’t until my mid 20s and having a few kiddos that I actually pursued my passions and made them a career. i got tired of hating going to work and having no impact on my community and one day I just called it quits and decided to focus on my art. as cliche as that may seem! another reason is because a hefty number of folks in my age range weren’t pushed to pursue our artistic career goals. There always had to be a plan B and I’m sure like me many others were convinced to just not go after their true passions. it ate me alive for a long time. And now I have a beautiful daughter, and I wanted to break the “get a good job and work your life away” narrative for her. she is my truest reason. Teaching her that you can pursue any dream she has, has inspired me to chase mine.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Well short answer I am a photographer. But my niche places me as a creative portrait and wedding photographer. Types of shoots that i naturally gravitate to are, intimate couples, motherhood, and creative portraits. Anything that is expressive and emotion provoking. Getting messy or getting in water is something that always try to incorporate in my work, it invokes your inner child and allows the shoots to be therapeutic and not just a business transaction. You hear the terms like “storytelling, emotive, intimate” quite a bit in my industry, and I feel like I embody those words. It wasn’t easy to find my authentic voice and true form of expression. The photog world can suck you in. I faced a lot of self-doubt in the beginning, but I just kept going deeper and just trying to connect with my art and the images I was producing and trying to be impactful on the people who trust me with a bit of their raw soul. Each client becomes a friend and I take a little lesson from each shoot whether it be something I need to work on personally or a new outlook on a subject I didn’t have perspective on. My hope is that each of my clients leaves with the same full heart as I do after our session, and I hope I encourage the community to let their creative self’s shine!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love showing people MY Colorado. I grew up in the Littleton Englewood area and was just one light rail away from the city.
my favorite breakfasts spots are
Louis Dinner
the home dinner
burrito co
and of course, Tacos Rapido’s. Harleys hot dog revolution and any local Pho for lunch’s
Denver has UNLIMITED activities! my personal favorites are hot pots, the children’s museum and the sombrero park for family fun. 5280 escape rooms, upstairs circus and backyard fire pits for some more adult fun. But I’m a through and through Colorado girl. I’m a sucker for a good view and an adventure to the mountains chasing sunset. I love hunting down abandoned structures and looking for old animal bones (yep, I was THAT girl)
JING, El five, happy camper are some of my favorite bite spots too! Seriously! There is nothing Colorado doesn’t offer! (except a beach)
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It has taken a whole village to get me here. My Fiancé and my kids (Vandell, Nova & Von) being my biggest support. Through weird hours and not making a lot of money in the beginning. My Family keeps me motivated and always encourages me. My mom Jessica and her undying love and support. She thinks the world of me and in return it has given me the confidence to go deeper in my work. My closest friends and family for always keeping me booked and busy with referrals, sharing my work and booking when they can! I also would not have divan deep enough to find my true form of expression if it wasn’t for an open shoot I did with local artist Meg Koning, artist, photographer and creator of the bones of us series. I learned so much about authenticity and raw emotion in such a short session time and it forever effected how I create and let my essence into each session. I encourage all creatives to shoot with her!
