We had the good fortune of connecting with KRISTA COVELL-PIERSON and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi KRISTA, do you have a budget? How do you make lifestyle and spending decisions?
We do have a budget however as a business owner experience has taught me that the budget needs to be fluid. Things happen. Equipment needs purchasing, staff needs hiring, and income fluctuates. I never consider the money within the business to be my own. I manage it as it belongs to someone else because in many ways it does. I make lifestyle choices based on what I can afford and focusing on what’s important to me like my family, travel, safety and making memories.

What should our readers know about your business?
Covell Care and Rehabilitation provides mobile outpatient occupational, physical, and speech therapy as well as personal training, and licensed clinical social work.

We travel to people’s homes and places where they work and play in order to provide context-based therapy. I am most proud to take a very non-traditional healthcare model and bring it to Colorado. I grew the business one step at a time and it now serves thousands of patients every year. Building the business didn’t come easy. I faced challenges of people not understanding what we provided, funding issues, staffing growing pains, and more. I overcame the challenges by believing in my heart that this business has been meant to be here. It’s a service people absolutely need access to and I was the person to do that. I’ve learned that relationships matter incredibly and the stronger and more personal relationships you cultivate, the more rewarding and impactful your work can be. I want the world to know that healthcare doesn’t have to be in a box. We can reinvent what we do and do healthcare BETTER. Reach out to providers, ask questions and don’t give up.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take visitors up to Horsetooth, may give stand up paddleboarding a try! I would take them to Old Town Fort Collins to eat and jump around to different restaurants and bars to get a feel for our awesome city. I would take them to Social for craft cocktails and encourage them to stay at the Elizabeth Hotel. I always love to check out local eats, food trucks, hiking trails and locally owned shops.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to my friend and long-time colleague, Cassandra Gonzales. When I started Covell Care and Rehabilitation, she believed in me from the start. She saw the potential for something great and believed in me when most people would shy away from working in a start-up. She has laughed with me through it all and we have cried with each other when things in our personal lives don’t go well. Without her, I really don’t think I could have stuck with the business. She is smart, honest, hard-working and loving. A strong and quiet leader, she has become an incredible friend and coworker.
