We had the good fortune of connecting with Joanne Mather and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joanne, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
With the music instustry a lot of people only see the end product, which is the musician/musicians up on stage performing. What they don’t see if the hours of hard work and practice that goes in to getting up on stage in the first place. The sacrifices that artists have made to be there. The costs of owning an instrument, tuition fees, maintenance ect ect.
I some times feel like it’s a slightly under respected profession in the sense that people don’t see the sacrifices that performers make and often the money artists get paid, doesn’t always reflect all of the above factors that run up to eventually getting on stage and performing.
People outside the industry dont often realise the person on stage, no matter how confident they may appear on the outside, is sometimes/often a bag of nerves and full of doubts inside like most people center stage infront of an audience would be. That’s why it’s important to try and not talk when an artist is performing, or at least do it below the level of the music so they don’t have to play over your conversation and just show some appreciation after each song by clapping. I’ve been at a lot of gigs over the years where the audience has been unresponsive and I have been on the receiving end of it as well and believe me, it can be soul destroying.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a musician the main hurdle we’ve all had to overcome is the covid lockdowns. It financially crippled us not being able to work and it’s certainly had a detrimental effect on the mental health of a lot of artists out there who didn’t have the help support around them that I was lucky enough to have.
Since then it’s been a case of starting from scratch and doing eveything I can to build back to where I want to be in my career.
Ive been fortune enough since that time to have some amazing career highlights. I’ve worked with the amazing Jim Duguid, the writer of Paolo Nuttinis first album “These streets” and Alex Clare hit “Too Close” . We released a mix of modern and old classics in a slowed, lounge style, chilled out vibe. You can find these on all major music platforms under my name Joanne Mather.
I performed with the world famous and world class act Post Modern Jukebox when they came to Nottingham recently. It was amazing to get up on the main stage of a packed out Rock City in front of 2000 people and do what I love to do and that’s sing. It was an experience I’ll keep with me for the rest of my life. You can see footage of this on the Lady Rose Music page and it’s also recently been shared my the music platform Music Crowns.
I recently went over to perform for a wedding in France at the awe inspiring Château Challain. Performing in another country was always something I’d dreamt of doing, but never thought it would actually come in to fruition. So to do that has opened up opportunities for me to perform abroad again in the future, which is extremely exciting.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well I’m from Nottingham, there’s so many beautiful places to visit. The beautiful market town of Bulwell, the picturesque area of lenton and of course the scenic and breathtaking place that is Broxtowe. But if I was planing a week long trip I’d have to say Forest Road west. Anyone from Nottingham would agree it really is a site to behold. Oh and not forgetting the Robin Hood statue.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s so many people you meet over the years and so many that have guided me on the path I am today, it’s extremely difficult to pick selected people. If I mentioned one left anyone out, I’d feel bad. But I do make a habit of making sure the people who have helped me over the years know that I fully appreciate their support and often try to reciprocate with help and support of my own.
I would say that the main reason I am where I am today, is my husband and the other half of Lady Rose Duo James. He’s been instrumental in guiding and supporting from the day we met. Without him I certainly wouldn’t have the confidence to take my career to the next step like I have done recently. I wrote a song for him when we first met called Journey. It still rings true to this day. Take a listen to it and the lyrics tells the story of the place I was in when we first met and how he’s helped and guided me ever since. It’s available on all major platforms is also available to purchase on CD via the Lady Rose page.
