Meet Mike McComb | Outdoor Living Contractor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike McComb and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mike, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business, one could say, was in my blood. My grandfather and father both started their own contracting businesses. It was just a matter of time before I figured out what specific industry I would start my own business in. The rest is history. I decided to start a legitimate company and get licensed as a contractor. Starting my own business has given me the opportunity to create my own schedule while doing something that I absolutely love. My company is growing and gaining a great reputation in the outdoor living industry. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to run my own business. The truth is that I could not imagine what it would be like to do what I do working for someone else. It was in my blood to pave my own path in the construction industry.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
There have been a lot of challenges that I have had to overcome. The biggest being that I did not have a lot of experience in the outdoor living industry. In 2016 I decided to rebuild my backyard deck. Though I grew up in and around construction, I had never done anything like building a structure attached to a house. But I decided to struggle through it. And struggle I did! It took months as a weekend warrior to complete the project. A lot of bad measurements, missed cuts and doing things in opposite order. But after 6 months it was complete and I felt really satisfied when it was finished. After that, my neighbor wanted me to build their deck. Now I got the chance to build something similar without a lot of the same mistakes. It turned out better than mine for sure. And in half the time! Then someone else I knew trusted me with their project. And so on. All while this was happening, I had to say “no” to some projects because they were too big and too complicated. I wasn’t ready yet. There were also times where I had to own my mistakes and go above and beyond to make the situation right. And that is exactly what I did. It has been a slow climb to get to where I am. And I hope to keep climbing by continuing to add projects that push my companies limits. I call it “selected vulnerability.” A person cannot grow and better themselves if they do not put themselves in vulnerable situations. Vulnerability leads to change and change leads to growth. But you have to be selective and slowly push yourself. That is the way I treat my company.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is so much to do in and around the Denver area! You have to start early with sunrise at Red Rocks amphitheater in Morrison. Then hit up the Cow Eatery in downtown Morrison (get the Cowboy Casserole). Then head up into the Foothills for a great midday hike. After that you keep going up into the mountains to check out Silverthorne or Breckenridge. So many great places to eat and more fun things to do if you like outdoor recreation. Then you can finish off the evening with a pro sporting event or local show. So much to do!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My dad started his own business when I was young and I grew up working for that business. So much of what I learned about the trades and running a business has come from what he directly taught me or indirectly through the opportunities that I was given because he started his own business. Even though I didn’t grow up working in the outdoor living industry, so much of what I brought to that industry stems from what I learned working for my dad’s business. He has always given me the opportunity to learn and gain experience as I worked my way up in his business. And he has always supported and encouraged me as I pursued my own path in life. It is without question that my success is due in part to his love, support and encouragement along the way.
