We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Roth and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paula, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

I started the Puppy Coach because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of puppies and newly adopted dogs, and for their pet parents as well. There are so many dogs that are relinquished to shelters due to behavioral issues and those issues can be solved with just a little knowledge and patience.  Dog training isn’t just teaching our pups basic commands such as sit, stay, and down. Dog training is also about solving behavioral problems by teaching humans how to communicate with their dogs.

Overall, we seem to think that dogs do things just to make their owners angry, or they have some agenda. They do not. Humans are the only mammal that act in that way. My goal is to share as much information as I can, to help save lives of dogs and reduce the amount of dogs that are relinquished to shelters through no fault of their own.

Fun. Passionate. Patient. Persistent. These are just a few of the characteristics that describe my style. I know each dog is different, and our pups communicate differently than we do.  I work with the whole family to give them the guidance that is tailored to them and their dog’s needs.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I started the Puppy Coach because I saw the need in our community for a trainer who not only knows first-hand the frustration that dog parents can go through, but is dedicated to help them achieve a calm and confident family member, one step at a time.

Training dogs is really training people, and the business is not always an easy one. There is a great deal of education, people skills, and patience involved. There is no magic wand, and every dog and dog parent are different. However, if I can help clients understand how to start their time with a new puppy right or give them the tools to communicate with their dog in a better way, we can help so many dogs stay out of shelters and off the euthanasia table. Another form of canine education that I have been certified in is Myo- Functional Canine Massage. I have clients that utilize my talents in both training and massage, which I feel sets me apart.

I specialize in new puppy/rescue programs, basic obedience, training through fun and games, and basic agility. If there is a client that comes to me with an issue that I don’t feel comfortable addressing, I have a network of amazing local trainers that I will refer them to so that they can still achieve results.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite place in Colorado to take a friend and their dog(s) would have to be the Roaring Fork Valley. This area of Colorado consists of Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Basalt and Aspen and is very dog friendly. Glenwood Springs is known for its hot springs. It is surrounded by the vast White River National Forest. The area is rich with wildlife and features Hanging Lake, Hotel Colorado, fishing, hiking and the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.  As you go down the valley, there are smaller, charming towns that have great dog parks, dog friendly trails, art festivals, farmers markets, horseback riding, and many outdoor events. You will have an amazing time…but always remember to keep your dog on a leash!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Freedom Service Dogs of America www.freedomservicedogs.org

I worked as a volunteer for Freedom and during my experiences there, I was inspired to start my canine training and canine massage education. I want to make a difference in the lives of dogs and their human companions.
