We had the good fortune of connecting with Leslie Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leslie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Without taking risks, you’d never progress. It’s easy to stay where you’re comfortable and hard to step out of your comfort zone. If I’m in a comfort zone, that’s the time I spend planning or looking for my next adventure. I have reinvented myself many times over my career and each reinvention opened new doors.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am where I am in my career, after taking a long and winding road. And no it definitely wasn’t easy. The universe has a way of showing you the way. You may be on a path that you are sure is the right one, but sometimes life takes you in a different direction. I was really interested in music at a young age and learned to play the piano, flute and viola. Singing is what ended up sticking and in college I was able to pursue that along with DJing at the radio station. After college I wanted to record songs and found it very frustrating having to rely on my friends to complete mixes we started. I started buying my own equipment piece by piece and learning how to use it, and ended up with a full production studio. Recording equipment was very expensive so I funded it by doing gigs on the weekends with my band. Working independently in my own studio was exhilarating and it was the beginning of my love of engineering. I spent hours at a time learning about mixing and recording. I was spending as much time behind the mic as I was behind the mixing board, so there was little time to sleep. I came across a lot of discrimination as a female engineer because there weren’t many but I made name for myself as an artist and producer of house music and ended up as the head engineer for one of the biggest dance music labels in NY..
The next leg of my journey began when a friend told me about a commercial acting class he was taking. I joined his class and started going on auditions for camera work and voiceover. I didn’t end up liking the on camera thing, but the voiceover world really peaked my interest. Since then, I’ve been juggling a job as a training facilitator for a major electronics company and doing voiceovers, music and video production for the past 15 years.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely start in the city. A walk on the Highline, go to Bryant Park for one of their many events like movie night. We’d stop through K-Town for some Korean BBQ and karaoke. We would go enjoy a walk along the piers on the West Side Highway and maybe take a nighttime Circle Line cruise around the city. There would of course be a least one house music party and maybe concert at Central Park Summerstage or Lincoln Center’s outdoor event space. I would also take them on a tour of the Apple 5th Ave store. It’s a sight to behold. If there was time I’d take them to Coney Island for a hot dog and a ride on the Cyclone.

Then we could head out to Long Island and check out one of our many beaches and the boardwalk.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Mom and Dad are the first thing that come to mind. Without their love and support of all I wanted to do, I wouldn’t have had the foundation I needed later in life. They exposed me to culture, an excellent education and taught me how to present myself in a positive way. Currently, as a voice actor I have become a member of an amazing network of like-minded, caring and giving people and coaches. Without them I’d be lost.
