We had the good fortune of connecting with Carmen & Joanna and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carmen & Joanna, every day, we talk about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The concept of our podcast was a long time coming. Carmen has been a true crime and horror movie buff for years. Joanna… not so much. She is the one who hides behind the couch during the scariest moments. The two of us have been close friends for 5 years, but it seems like a lifetime. Knowing the differences we share, coupled with our common interest in a good story and laughter, Carmen went to Joanna with the proposition of a podcast. True crime podcasts are a dime a dozen, but we wanted our show to stand out. So that’s where Carmen came up with the idea of “true crime case or movie plot”. After ironing out some details, Carmen reached out to Joanna with the concept, “What if I told you a story, and you had to decide if it was a true crime case or the plot of a movie?”. Joanna’s response was an immediate and very emphatic, “YES!”. After some research, we realized that there was a niche available for our style of show. This easily flowed into us deciding to start the Live Laugh Murder: A True Crime Podcast… Sometimes.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We have always felt a need for a creative outlet. We both love a good story and a good laugh. Knowing these two aspects, we felt a pull toward story-telling to the masses. Way before we came up with the concept of what “Live Laugh Murder” should be, we knew we wanted to share our stories with the world. It is so exciting for us to be able to share a different perspective of true crime/movie podcasts. Carmen has heard it all, from downright scary to the paranormal. While Joanna on the other hand, hates scary but has lived through the paranormal. This became the perfect storm for our show.

Starting our podcasts has been seamless in the sense of chemistry and a good time between best friends. When we are able to get together to record, our episodes don’t even feel like “recording”, but rather two best friends sharing stories over a glass of wine.

As far as lessons we have learned since starting our podcast, it has become apparent that an authentic conversation and good sound quality are gold. We will continue to strive to grow in these two areas as we feel this is the most important aspect of our show.

When telling a true crime story, we will continue to be respectful to the victim(s) and facts of the case, as we feel they are the most important parts of a story. With the utmost respect, we will also try to lighten the mood, if possible. As we have learned in life that even in the darkest times, there are still reasons to smile. Consequently, when telling the plot of a movie, the integrity of the film will always be respected during a retelling in our show. With that being said, we will always take the opportunity to roast the bad guys whether it be a true crime case or movie plot.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are Florida Girls at heart (even though neither of us were born here)! If you were to spend a weekend in our town we would recommend the following: -A beach day as no place in Florida is more than 90 miles from a beach.
-Go on a haunted ghost tour in the historic River District of Downtown Fort Myers.
-Experience an airboat ride with the alligators at Billy’s Swamp Safari in the Florida Everglades
-Try your luck at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Miami

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When starting our podcast, one of the most beautiful and surprising aspects was the connection made with other podcasts hosts. We were fortunate enough to have the stars align perfectly for us to match with a small group of other newer shows like us. Seeing the growth in research and sound quality of others, inspired us to raise our game and give the best quality content that we are able to provide. Originally we were originally inspired by huge podcasts like “Morbid” and “Crime Junkie”. As time went on with starting our show, the true inspiration came from other newer shows like us. On that note, we would love to shout out “Evil Pudding” by Pat and Courtney. You won’t be sorry!
