We had the good fortune of connecting with Siera Potter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Siera, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Personally I have never had the mentality that my career was risky. I mean in hindsight of course it’s risky to start up your own salon and buy all the over head with the hope that people come and support you, however I just always felt like it was meant for me. I’m a firm believer that’s what is meant to be mine, will be. There is plenty of success for everyone and those who are called to be my clients just will be. Its all about having the confidence that you bring something to your community that other people need. Whether that’s your skill, your love of the craft, or your heart for your clients. You bring something to the table that others don’t.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career has been building for the last 8 years and I have loved every minute of it. I started out in a commission salon and really honed in on my craft, and then slowly worked my way to booth rent. There I worked on refining who my clientele was, what color line sparked my creativity, and how to be a counselor all in one. As hairstylists we hold all the secrets of our clients. We get to see young children grow into blossoming adults, couples fall madly in love and get married, and some couples move on from each other. We are there in the good and bad times and there’s something beautiful about being able to be a safe space for so many people. To have people excited to see you because you make their day better and spark their confidence. While this career can be exhausting, it’s probably one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in my life outside of being a mother.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ohh I love this question, I would definitely take them to Moodys lounge in Grand Junction Co for a delicious whiskey and dinner, then we would peruse downtown and fall into a few dive bars. There is nothing better than playing a little corn hole and pool.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I one hundred percent couldn’t do this without the love and support of my husband and two boys. Who selflessly support me while I’m away from home 10 hours a day. I also wouldn’t be where I am without the continued education of my color line that I work for, Alfaparf Milano has taught me so much extra education in this craft and has really helped refined my skills.
