We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooks Luby and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brooks, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Authenticity. Plain and simple. If you follow your heart it will show up everywhere and anywhere you choose to highlight your brand and what you are doing. It’s easy to communicate, comfortable and creates a sense of well being for yourself and others that you surround yourself with

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a slow fashion designer, interested in the journey as part of the whole. Learning new techniques and processes keeps my pieces current and interesting. My newest collection are relaxed silhouettes where I have added surface design. (Hand stitching, subtle paint techniques and dimensional draping). When I discover a new shape from draping the upcycled pieces I incorporate it into a modern new fabric. All of my chosen modern fabrics are eco-friendly and each piece is well made.

For the first time I have created a ‘Little Black Dress’ that I’m excited about. It is different and has incorporated The Art of Japanese Draping to set it apart from other LBD (little black dresses)as well as other pieces in this collection.

I love the touch and manipulation of textiles, each one does different things and as the design develops I learn from each creation. Currently I am loving vintage textiles mixed with modern cloths in my designs.

Advice: follow your heart and be authentic, The rest will aline with your beliefs and aesthetic. Feel the joy you are creating in an otherwise complicated world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite fish monger is Seafood Landing in the Highlands neighborhood.  If you are staying at a BNB it’s a great take away for a lovely cooked at home meal.  While exploring that neighborhood there are great small, independently owned business on 32nd to check out.  Another place to stroll, shop, eat and play is Rino.  It has wonderful outdoor graffiti as you explore the neighborhood.  Many favorite museums around downtown are Denver Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Clifford Still Museum, while strolling there is a great deli to grab a bite at Leven Deli Company.  Out South is the Museum of Outdoor Arts.  My favorite art galleries are located along Wazee Street (all near my brick and mortar) KContemporary, Robischon gallery, David Cook Galleries. Be sure to check out Rockmount Ranchwear for true western wear.  As you stroll in this neighborhood walk down to the Milk Market to grab a bite along with checking out the Maven Hotel.  Just a few blocks from that is our Baseball Stadium.  The Botanic Gardens is a great experience along with checking out their new museum.  If you want to venture away from the city you can go to Lookout Mountain stop at Buffalo Bills grave and then stop in Golden for a light dinner.  So many exciting things to do this is just a small sampling, as our city keeps growing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to My Mother, who taught me about the value of the beauty in textiles, My Father who taught me perserverence and drive and especially My Husband who puts up with the daily dealings of my erratic behavior and my unconscious behavior. He is the calm in my world of chaos. All of my clients have been inspirations for designing and they have supported my vision in the years I’ve been in business. 🙏
