We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Delp and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I believe that building relationships is one of the most important factors behind success in the photography business. That may be finding a photography community to shoot and edit with, being able to ask questions or just spend time together. My group of photographer friends have pushed me to do some of my best work in the last couple of months and I appreciate them so much. Building relationships also refers to our clients. A client’s experience during and after their photo session is oftentimes what keeps them consistently booking with a photographer. I have worked with so many clients that I would now call my friends, but otherwise may have never had the privilege of meeting them. Our clients are the reason we are able to continue pursuing a career as a photographer, and these key relationships are what makes it successful.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started photography in September 2021 and it has definitely been a learning experience! I had taken pictures since I was younger, but did not decide to pursue it professionally until last year. I knew I loved capturing moments for my family and felt that it would be such a rewarding career. It was not easy learning how to manage social media, juggle another full-time position, complete school work, teach myself how to edit and learn the ropes of being a business owner. Since last year, I know that I have grown tremendously, but there is always room for growth and so much more I want to learn. One lesson I have learned along the way is to stop with comparison. There are hundreds of AMAZING photographers and it is so easy to compare your work to theirs and get down on yourself, but it is so important to remember that your clients book you because they like your work and who you are!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So, I am from Virginia/Tennessee and recently visited Colorado in July for the first time (although it will definitely not be my last time). If my best friend and I went to Colorado, we would definitely have to go to Rocky Mountain National Park, Sand Dunes, Denver (watch a baseball game), and Garden of the Gods! We would definitely got to Dutch Bros for a coffee as well.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely would not have been able to start photography without my dad buying me my first camera last year for my birthday and my husband upgrading my lenses. Many people said I already had too much on my plate or questioned that I would not stick with it, but they never doubted me for a second. I quickly realized how important it was to have good camera gear!
I also want to thank Reverie Retreats (hosted by Hannah Murray Photography and Sam Bond Photography). I went on my first photography retreat in July and I am not exaggerating when I say it completely changed the game for me. I am more confident in posing, editing, shooting, and photography in general. That has been the best investment for my business thus far! Plus, I gained a wonderful photographer community as well.
