Meet David Abookire | Licensed Massage Therapist and Founder of Boulder Therapeutics, Inc.

We had the good fortune of connecting with David Abookire and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. As a child I had paper routes, shoveled snow from driveways, cut lawns and started a car cleaning business. I worked in corporate America for a few years then decided to set out on my own. I did some backcountry guiding and also taught myself HTML coding and designed websites for a few companies, but all along I wanted to do something that helped people.
I went to massage school in 1998 in hopes of learning a trade that engages with individuals directly and decided to open my own massage therapy practice. As my private practice grew, I began hiring other wonderful therapists to help me on my quest to support the Boulder community by providing high quality massage therapy and rehabilitative services.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started Boulder Therapeutics, Inc to fill a gap in healthcare. I had the good fortune of working with the Colorado Rapids for 12 seasons as their team massage therapist. I was amazed at how much support professional athletes are given and how they recover from injuries much faster because of that care.
Boulder Therapeutics, Inc was founded to support the athletes and injured individuals in the Boulder/Denver area who didn’t know where else to seek care. I have worked hard to create a team of therapists who really care about helping their clients and who believe in educating people so they can be empowered to make better, healthier decisions.
After 23+ years, I still answer the business phone. I believe in personally supporting people who are in pain or those who are preparing for a race or just trying to live without discomfort. I know what’s it’s like to be frustrated when injuries aren’t healing or when you’ve lost hope on who to trust for your health. That’s what this business is all about for me. It’s a way for me to treat people like they are “professional athletes” and support them with the care they need so they can get back to doing what they love. Our motto is that, “We Get Results!”…and I want people to always feel their best so they can pass along that positive feeling to others they interact with.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I LOVE the mountains and have lived in Nederland for over 20 years. Colorado is so beautiful, peaceful and serene, especially if you’re able to get out past the crowds. Hiking to a high alpine lake, sharing views from atop a peak and hiking thru wildflowers or checking out the aspens changing color in the fall sounds like a great adventure. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to spend time with the entire family and our pup.
If you know me, you know I also enjoy mountain biking and skiing. Being outdoors and playing hard while enjoying time with friends and family is a perfect day for me. Grabbing a drink on Pearl St or at a local brewery and bite to eat at a local restaurant is a fun way to wrap up the day. Or maybe going to see some live music at a venue (indoors or out) and dancing like there’s no tomorrow.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I can’t thank my parents enough for their support and guidance along the way. Transitioning from being a corporate banker, then dabbling in a number of small entrepreneurial projects before landing in massage therapy school must have been challenging for them to witness. They were never judgemental or showed any disappointment in what could have been looked at as a “step backwards” from college. They allowed me to find my way and ultimately be happy in my career choice.
