We had the good fortune of connecting with Carrie Brum and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carrie, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I was younger my parents always encouraged me to pursue my passions. I decided that I wanted to enjoy the job I picked for my life long career. As a creative person anything artistic comes so natural to me and I really enjoy doing it. They always say that it’s not work if you love what you do, and I can say from experience that this is true. There is nothing more rewarding that being able to do what I love as a job. I think its very important to remember when making your hobby your career be sure to have some projects outside of work just for fun. If you want to work in a creative career just take the leap!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Honestly I like to consider myself a jack of many trades. When it comes to traditional artwork i do alot of illustrations, graphic designs, and costume creation. Like many artist I feel like i have a personal style. I can draw really anything a clients wants in my style however i really love to focus on animal skulls, flowers, and interesting geometric shapes and patterns. Over the years I have also had the honor to do a lot of DnD themed illustrations. When it comes to costume/cosplay creation I spend a lot of time creating a unique take on the original character and create a fully curated outfit. I am excited to spend some time off to create a whole new series of prints and designs. I plan on placing my designs on a lot of new products like notebooks, sticky pads, weekly planners and more. As someone who struggles with health issues, i think the most challenging thing for me is to balance health and work. If im not healthy i’m not able to do the work i love and that’s a sad fact of life so making sure my health comes first always has to be my top priority. I’ve definitely learned along the way that it’s so easy being your own boss. however it is very rewarding.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live here in South Shore Massachusetts, rather close to Rhode Island. The first thing on the list to do would be to check what shows are happening that week. Personally i enjoy metal/rock concerts, raves, and theater productions ! After grabbing tickets to mostlike 4-5 shows in the providence, ri or boston, ma area. We would plan fun trips to those cities for each day we have a show going into the city early to get lunch and try a new place for maybe boba or dessert. On the days that we had left we will be hitting my favorite japanese restaurant for sushi and probably having one lazy day to watch tv catch up and eat comfort food in our pjs. if we had time i might even suggest a trip to salem ma! especially if it was the off season.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As a freelancer having a support system is extremely important. The first person I want to showcase is my Mother. She has always encouraged and supported me along my creative journey. Without her support I don’t know if i would have chosen to pursue a career in the arts. even though I struggle with many health condition my mom has always been there for me to lean on when i need a little help. The second person I want to showcase is my partner Chris I can’t count the number of times he has helped me to make sure i can continue to do what i love doing.. Finally I want to showcase my friends. I love being able to bounce creative ideas around, with them and get some creative criticism !Working from home sometimes can also be difficult but for me having a friend over to keep me company always helps me focus and get my work done!! I am so fortunate to have such a wonderful support system!
