We had the good fortune of connecting with Jose martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jose, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I am a firm believer that in order to grow and stay ahead of the curve, take risks from time to time. We begin to grow and carve new paths once we are out of our comfort zone. But also know when to take risks and when to stop, take a step back and assess your situation.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from other designers is my hunger to learn other talents such as video, photo and 3D. I want to teach others from my experience. It opens up opportunity to talk about God to those that may not even know or have the same experience as I have. In this day and age, we don’t seem to want to listen to others opinions or struggles. I am most excited about learning the interview processes from writing and research to video, audio and post processing. There is a market for “Legacy Interviews” and I want to be some of the few that can make it great and take it another step further. I got where I am by working three jobs in college, breaking bad habits like drugs and alcohol and creating a new group of supportive friends. It wasn’t easy because while trying to make healthy choices and staying positive, my personal and spiritual life was struggling. My faith was tested more than a handful of times but knowing that I can’t control everything and leaving it in God’s hands was so eye opening. The lessons I have learned along the way, hmm. I would say first and foremost, life isn’t easy and we don’t know what is in our future. Love hard but keep your wits about you. Give others a chance and learn to listen and slow to speak. Learn to network, create strong friendships with other local businesses. Offer services that will help them flourish and the just rewards will come to you in time. The thing I want the world to know is that I was not born in the U.S.A. I came here crossing the Rio Grande back in the late 70s- early 80s. My memories of that part of my life are vivid. I became a permanent resident in the late 80’s, planning on becoming a citizen in 2023. I attended college and I will admit, I am living the American dream. I am very patriotic even though I can’t vote. I pay my taxes with a smile because God has blessed me with the means to do so. My brand is based off of what one of my professors would say from time to time. When a design was “heavy-duty” to him, it was all around good. Even though not all of my designs are great, “heavy-duty” is what we strive for. My brand is going through a logo change in the next few months and I hope the end product shows the love we are putting into it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would never take my friend to Bricktown unless he is a drinker. I would take him to the outskirts of town, go get lost in the city and surrounding towns. Pointing them to hidden gems only locals know about is a wonderful thing to know and wish someone had a website dedicated to that in every state. I would show my visitor the food trucks. They are bomb-diggedy here in OKC! One of my favorite truck is called Donut Man. He has the raddest food truck and his donuts are to die for. The funnest places are Factory Obscura, antiquing in Guthrie because their town is so beautiful and tranquil, go to an OU game, experience your first real Powwow and an Indian taco, as far as people, my good friend Edgardo and Daniel. Two of the coolest cats! One makes video games and the other comic books as side gigs. They do what they love.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would first like to take this time and give all the thanks and praise to my Lord and savior Jesus Christ because without Him, I would have not had my prayers answered nor my dreams come true. I’d like to dedicate this opportunity as well to my parents for teaching me the rewards of hard work and perseverance. To Fort Hays State University for having the best professors ever. To Karrie and Chaiwat for teaching us that we can speak loudly with design. For the jobs that fired me because they didn’t feel I was worth a raise and keeping around. Thank you for lighting that motivation flame.
