We had the good fortune of connecting with Shayla Rice and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shayla, why did you pursue a creative career?
I grew up in a wildly artistic family and everything I ever wanted to do was art based. Singing, dancing, paiting, sculpting. I just happened to land on hair, skin, and nails as the career that felt right! I fell in love with seeing people confident and excited about their looks and making them feel good in their skin.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I spent a lot of time being insecure about how I looked and expressed myself. I have had rainbow and vivid hair colors since I was 12 and always loved it, but small parts of me wished I was “normal” (a term I really don’t believe in anymore)

When I started leaning into my oddball Ness and my abilities, vivid / fantasy colors and alternative looks it made me feel awesome! People started to see that confidence and love my art as much as I did!

I’ve learned that confidence and self love is key go bringing my art to life. Letting go of societal expectations and embracing what made me feel beautiful and creative was the best thing I ever did, it’s grown my art exponentially and my confidence even more.

I find that my passion is to bring that confidence to others, outside od the societal norm. Embrace your “imperfections” and even love them if you want! That’s why I became a loctican and cosmetologist!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My dream is to get my best friend down to Denver with me. We would have to go to a red rocks show, 100%. Nothing is better than a red rocks concert, and the food there is also great, awesome vendors!

We also absolutely have to go to Meow Wolf, a perfect place for creative fantasy loving weirdos to come together.

Since she’s touristing I’d have to take her to casa Bonita, i have ridiculous stories there that I tell her and she’s absolutely dying to go.

Colorado Mills Mall is an awesome shopping spot, with Bubleisious boba shop inside! I recently had my first ever boba there and it’s was amazing, and the death of mall culture kind of breaks my heart!

We’re also both lovers of sushi so I’d have to take her to sushi-rama for a nice dinner! I love a good sushi conveyer belt.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to my Family, my mom and Dad for inspiring me for always supporting me 110%, to my instructors at TCR Shawna and Kirsten for teaching me so much along the way and always being supportive and helpful, and of course my Spotlight Fam for bringing me on and lifting me up!
