Meet Ariel Detvay | Cosmetologist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ariel Detvay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ariel, what inspires you?
I am inspired by helping people see their own beauty. A hair cut, style or color sounds like such a simple thing. But when you can feel your client relax as you begin working on them and then see the look of joy and or confidence come across their face when they see themselves once you are done… it’s really a great feeling. People need to feel comfortable and confident with themselves.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have been a licensed cosmetologist for 21 years. I started beauty school because I was lost… I have a head full of curls that I was bullied pretty badly for growing up and figured I could finally figure out what to do with them. But very quickly I fell in love with cosmetology. While in school I volunteered to help victims of domestic violence and realized how much people need to just feel good about themselves. Over the years I have done many volunteering events from helping homeless teens, abused women and children, to shaving hair to raise money for cancer. I have even worked as a educator for a couple of the local cosmetology schools. And am now running my own private salon suite. Although I work with all textures of hair, I have also become certified in a couple of different curly cut, color and styling techniques. I love to help others learn how to love their hair and feel confident with it. I opened my salon suite May of 2020. It was a huge leap of faith opening my own business during the height of the pandemic but it was a “now or never” situation. And thankfully through the support of my wonderful clients… I made it! Being self employed has been an amazing experience for me! It’s a lot of work and definitely keeps me on my toes but it is so worth it!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a Colorado native so I could go on all day about this! I was born in Manitou Springs, so we would definitely head there and just enjoy a day of walking around the town. Hands down Garden of the gods is my favorite spot in all of Colorado. The Pioneer Museum and National Museum of World War ll Aviation are also a hidden gems in this town.
The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is always a hit! I also enjoy going to the Pikes Peak Center to watch a broadway/theater show.
Panio’s either on 8th street or Tejon has been a family favorite place to eat since I was a kid. Paravicini is amazing Italian food. Josh and John’s for ice cream. Boonzaaijer Dutch Bakery for… all the yumminess!!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom, Edenna Taylor. She passed away last May. But she was always my biggest supporter, encourager and guinea pig lol
