Meet Jordyn Dorrance | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordyn Dorrance and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordyn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
For me the biggest draw of starting my own business was the potential for flexibility. I have three children, the youngest being a toddler and between my husband and I our life is piecing childcare together, working opposite schedules and in the end spending whatever time was left, spending that time together. I see time passing and time slipping away and the thought of a traditional career is just not what I wanted.
While I know creating and running your own business is no walk in the park, at least it gives me the option of flexibility and down times where I can spend real quality time with my family.
Another huge driving factor is being able to be creative. I love being able to have a vision and bring it to fruition, working with couples or families on their visions or just seeing something in the world and capturing it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I went to school for photography, I loved it, I loved capturing moments naturally and I loved creating moments to capture, setting up photo shoots, posing people and situations. When I graduated my mom instantly asked what I was going to do after school? “Well, make art.” Was my response. She wanted me to get into weddings and portrait photography. The mear thought put me in a panic. The idea of capturing peoples most special life moments scared me… what if miss something?! What if they don’t like it?! I can never get that moment back! So I avoided it for years. After having children and getting married myself and going through those huge life moments, I shifted my thinking and said “Instead of being scared to capture these moments, I would be honored to capture these moments. I can still use my artistic and creative side the way I capture these life moments and that is what sets me apart from others. I want to spend real time with the people I photograph. I want to capture a feeling, the candid moments.
Have there been challenges? Absolutely! The biggest challenge is time. I have three kids, the youngest a baby. That means photo sessions on the weekends and editing at night after everyone is asleep but I wouldn’t trade anything in the world… just a few more hours added to the day would be nice!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in the western slope of Colorado… where to begin? My absolute favorite place I would take a visiting friend is Ouray, Colorado! It doesn’t look like Colorado! It looks like a European mountain town. Waterfalls around every corner and a hot springs!
Next I would go to Crested Butte to snowboard and grab a drink at the Dogwood.
Then we would hang out in Gunnison, hike around Hartman Rocks and spend the day at Blue Mesa Reservoir… all while taking pictures of course!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank my husband and my parents for endless support and encouragement with my photography journey. When I am not feeling creative or stuck my husband will always encourage me to shoot photos, anything and everything to keep me going!
My parents have always been a major support and helped me get where I am today!
