We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Govier and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

I worked for years at an hourly job and it was GREAT until it wasn’t. During lockdowns, I had a lot of time to think and learn and grow (as so many others did) and I found that I was working my ass off to make someone else a TON of money. I knew that my time was more valuable than the return I was getting for all of my efforts so I started exploring other options. My fiance and I got turned on to real estate investing at the end of 2020 and I decided to pursue my real estate license with the thought that I would handle any deal we pursued. Things at my hourly job went from miserable to unbearable and with my license in hand, I found a real estate team to join and took the leap as a full-time agent.

Moving from a guaranteed paycheck to commission only was frightening – I went 2 months without a paycheck (thankfully it was only a short period of time!) and after I got the first closing under my belt, I was on a roll. I felt great about the success I was having and eventually, decided I would be better off going completely solo as an agent. Another scary move but again, I trusted in myself and my abilities and went for it! I’ve been a full-time, solo agent since March of 2022 and have never looked back. After leaving my team, I nearly tripled my income and am so grateful to be completely self-employed.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I was raised in the hospitality industry – my dad was a restaurant manager for a good amount of my childhood, so, naturally, when it was time for me to get a job, I gravitated towards the restaurant scene. In 2011, I took a job as a hostess at Panzano under Josh Mayo and Chef Elise Wiggins – while I was there I learned the art of creating a memorable guest experience. Eventually, I took those skills and transitioned into a retail job as an assistant manager at lululemon in Cherry Creek. My favorite thing about both of those jobs was the opportunity I had to positively impact someone’s day – a WOW! It’s you greeting, getting them a last-minute table at 7pm on a Friday, finding them the product they’ve been searching for for weeks, etc. I thrive off of that feeling!!

When I went into real estate, I knew I wanted to bring that same energy and have the same impact, but on a bigger level. I want my clients to feel educated, resourceful, and confident in their decision to purchase a property. Home buying can be intimidating but it doesn’t have to be – we can have fun along the way as we tackle any and all of the obstacles we face along the way. So, to answer the question, that’s how Sweat Equity Real Estate was born. I put in all the hard work on the front end for my clients so they can reap the benefits of building equity from a great deal on the back end 🙂

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When I travel to a new city, all I want to do is eat the BEST food! If my best friend was in town, first, I’d take her to grab a coffee at either Corvus or Wagon Coffee Roasters. As we sip we’d take a nice stroll at Wash Park and do some people watching and be on the lookout for bikes (stay OUT of the bike lane – you’ll get yelled at lol). Next, we’d head to Just Be Kitchen for a chicken quesadilla and a brownie before we head down to RiNo to check out all of the art and cute little shops. And, to end the perfect day, we’d head to Blue Pan, Redeemer, or Cart Driver for the BEST pizza. And since we’re enjoying a food tour, we’d take a nice little drive up to Cherry Pie provisions to enjoy the most delicious pie ever!

The amount of good food in Denver is endless – one day is NOT enough!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

There is no one I’d rather shoutout than my incredible fiancè, Bryce Givens. He was the biggest inspiration for me to jump into entrepreneurship and when he says he’s going to do something, he doesn’t give up and will find a way to make it happen.

He started Elevate Recovery Homes in April of 2021 and as of today, has 6 total homes and a program that helps men in recovery find community, support, and take control of their recovery. He’s also taken it one step further and has opened an IOP treatment center, True North Recovery Services, in Denver where he can help men, women, and adolescents get the help they need!
