Meet Abstract | Independent Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Abstract and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abstract, why did you pursue a creative career?
I think taking something from an idea and turning it into something that exists is one of the most fulfilling experiences this world can offer. I also believe writing and the reflection that it allows has to led to a deep understanding of myself that I would not have without it and I’m constantly writing to nurture that understanding.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I write with a very therapeutic approach. Investigating my personal experiences, hopes, fears, dreams, etc. To a point where I think I would not know how to function without it. The understanding it gives me of myself, my situations and the world at large truly feels like something I could not live without. That said, becoming a full time independent artist especially in this day and age is no easy feat. You’re competing with so much noise and it’s definitely harder than ever to cut through but with that my cliche advice is to just be you. Seriously though, lean into what makes you different. It might not give you the speed of results that joining a wave or a trend will but it will give you longevity and allow you to stick so much better when you do break through.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Nashville has an insane amount to do so I would take them maybe to walk around The Parthenon, begrudgingly hit Broadway cause it’ll be a zoo but we have to go cause I’m hosting you on your stay so I’ll do it for you, then head to midtown to close out the night at Tin Roof with some live music, then grab some Pho and Thai Tea in the morning to curb the hangover.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would say my right hand guy and producer/mixing engineer, Cryo Music. We’ve been woking together for 10 yeas and have grrown alongside each other to levels we used to only dream about. His real name is Craig Mcallister and he’s from Glasgow, Scotland. I was still in Jackson, WY when we met on Youtube all those years ago and he continues to mix the vocals for just about everything I release.
