We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Joggerst and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had a very specific vision for The Wardian as I started remodeling the building in 2021. I knew one of my main objectives was to bring the community together through the love of houseplants. We have a vast outdoor space and if you can imagine it, we will find a way to make it happen. Our summer lineup for 2023 includes art, movie nights, food trucks, concerts and much more!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Wardian is a boutique plant shop with gifts and home items. I curate 100% of the inventory and I’m very proud of how the shop feels for every customer who walks in. We carry a wide selection of houseplants for every kind of plant parent.
I know what sets us apart is our level of service and commitment to our customers. My team loves helping plant parents thrive when they decide to bring new green babies home! While we are a retail business, I believe we build friendships and kinship with every guest that comes through.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I grew up in Denver so I have seen the changes in the city especially the culinary scene. I am a huge fan of Tavernetta and Sunday Vinyl because their service is always on point. Champagne is my kryptonite and Tavernetta has one of the best champagne lists in the city not to mention amazing sommeliers (Trey and Rihanna)! For those looking for fabulous sushi, my dear friend is the mastermind at Foraged in the Dairy Block. Chef Duy Pham will knock you speechless with his omakase creations. I have know Duy for years and his creativity knows no bounds. I also love Temaki Den because it’s delicious, affordable and simple.
The Mile Hi city has so much to offer when it comes to chic bars and cocktails. I love Cooper Lounge in Union Station for the vintage charm. In RiNo, Ramble Hotel offers sleek vibes for the hipsters. If you’re seeking something less ostentatious then PonPon is always a cute stop.
We could easily hit up a show on any given night at Red Rocks, Mission Ballroom, Larimer Lounge, Meadowlark, The Ogden, Bluebird, The Fillmore etc… Live music is one of the best things about Denver’s vibrant night life.
I am a member at Clayton in Cherry Creek and that is a fun way to start an evening on their rooftop restaurant and bar. Right next door is Forget Me Not which offers specialty cocktails and interesting people watching.
I live on the west side of town so a hike at Red Rocks would definitely be on the todo list and finishing with some beers in Morrison at the biker bar.
Finally, I would absolutely insist we spent some time at The Wardian. We have a beer and wine license at the shop so it’s a perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine while catching up in a warm and inviting environment.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Gutsy women inspire me. My three older sisters have been my champions in starting The Wardian. I have so many accomplished girlfriends who have their own businesses and they are the ones who lead the way. Last, but not least, my mom is Kween! She brought six kids to the United States in 1981 without a penny to her name and raised us to be hardworking and independent adults. Susie is supreme.
