We had the good fortune of connecting with Casey Stelter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Casey, is there something you believe many others might not?
Growing up, most of us heard “Jack of all trades, master of none”. Iterations of this idiom have been published since 1592, and were probably in use well before that. That’s at least 430 years of humans hearing the same tired expression. I think Viktor Vicsek improved on it when he said, “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one”.

The original leads with the idea that focusing your time and attention on one thing is superior to trying and learning different things. I call bullshit.

I strongly feel the best innovators are those that bring together skills from multiple disciplines. The flexibility to learn new things quickly is a skill in itself! Stephen Hawking once claimed, “intelligence is the ability to adapt to change”.

People with a wide range of knowledge and experiences are likely to be better at decision-making and take a more creative problem solving approach. A broad range of skills serves you better in whatever you’re doing.

I am thankful to have been given opportunities to try, learn, and enjoy many things; several of which have come together to create what is now SheWolf Studios.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Howdy, I’m Casey, the artist behind SheWolf Studios. I make peculiar pottery for stoners and funky maximalists! I chose the name “SheWolf” partly due to my long-standing obsession with wolves and to convey a fierce and feral feminine energy. My favorite things to create right now are the Doll Heady pipes and bongs, but I also make cheeky mugs, doll head planters, bolo ties, doll arm ring stands, and much more. This year I’m creating more home decor like mirrors and lamps! I’m really proud to have a strong aesthetic that stands apart from traditional functional ceramics, while staying true to myself. Just like I said last year, sometimes people are put off by certain pieces or collections of mine- and that’s okay! My art is for ANYONE, but not necessarily everyone.

The biggest thing that has aided in my small successes has been asking for what I want. I figure the worst that can happen is someone will think I’m annoying and say “no”. People can’t say “yes” to what you don’t ask for, so I say go for it! But don’t get me wrong, I struggle with imposter syndrome like everyone else. It ebbs and flows like all feelings do, so my other recommendation is to check in with yourself often so you can sit in, and work through those emotions. A lot of times it can be based in fear and jealousy, so understanding the root cause can aid in letting it go and moving on (HA! can you tell I’m an ex- board certified music therapist and social worker?)

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well my best friend EVER is my Mom and I would take her to a few of my favorite shops like The Terrorium Shop to visit my doll head planters and buy some bones. Then we would stop by Goldmine Vintage to see what wearable treasures they have. I also wanna check out Linger, the restaurant located in a former mortuary. We don’t eat out much, so if we did, it has to be here. I also LOVE Snooze for a breakfast date.
I’m also one of those weird people that likes to drive around old neighborhoods and look at houses, so we’d grab coffee from Ziggy’s and go stare at people’s homes. Anyone else ever crashed an open house?
I don’t drink, so we would probably stop at Medicine Man to grab some green. I do pop-ups with them and always have a great experience when shopping. They also have a container recycling program!
I’ve already been to Meow Wolf a couple times, but even after living here 6 years, I’ve never been to the Denver Art Museum, so I would definitely take her to explore. I’d also like to check out the Molly Brown House because DUH a pretty old house, story of a strong woman, and spooky location?! I’m in.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, William, gets all the credit for urging me to dream big, and supporting us while I build this business. I wouldn’t be able to even consider doing ceramics full time if it weren’t for him. He makes sure I have a meal when I’m 9 hours into glazing and haven’t eaten all day, helps me load and unload my vehicle for markets, the list goes on and on. Love you, babu.
