We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Cutter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, how do you think about risk?
Taking risk has been a central theme in my life for decades. I was a rock climber for many years an have always been drawn to high risk. Looking back, I recognize the importance of taking risk as a part of self growth. There are ancient practices that see fear as this sort of gatekeeper to ultimate freedom, whereby fear is ultimately an illusion or mask that is keeping the truth from being seen. Spiritually speaking, only those willing to take the ultimate risk, and allow the death of the ego, will attain liberation. Practically speaking, it is the same fears that hold us back from living joyfully in relationships, career, and health.

In my training as a life purpose coach I have learned from indigenous shamans and contemporary teachers alike. The same theme of fear avoidance/confrontation is a central theme. As a part of my training I learned the various personality archetypes that exist within us. There is leadership, creativity, insight, passion, family and others. Each archetype has its positive qualities as well as its challenge qualities. With the creative (Apollo) archetype, for instance, life is about shining your light on the world and allowing the light to shine on you. The desire is to be appreciated in your unique form of self expression. The fear is that others won’t approve. Not taking the risk results in apathy, hiding out, afraid to be seen. Conversely, taking the risks and learning to not take criticism personally builds confidence to be bold and ultimately become a beacon of light and inspiration. The same dynamic exists in every archetype, from leadership to business, to family, to mentorship and so on. The common theme through all is we have to be willing to take the risks necessary in order to become successful and joyful in life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been an artist al of my life. For 25 years I was a graphic designer. In 2012 I was called through a near death experience to commit my life to the healing arts and a different kind of creativity. It was a difficult journey that led me to working with Shamans from various traditions around the world. I have worked closely with a Sangoma (shaman) from S. Africa and have spent time in the Kalahari learning from the San Bushmen. I have formal training in several shamanic healing styles from contemporary and indigenous traditions including apprenticeship training in the Andes and Amazon of Ecuador.

I believe that in the combining of the ancient earth/heart/creative/feminine based practices with modern science is the key to resolving the issues we face today. We live in a fast-paced, technology driven world that is disconnected from the essence of what it is to be human. We live in a world of logic and science that does not value creativity and non-linear thought. There are many issues resulting from this imbalance. By honoring the wholeness of our humanity we heal and become leaders in the community.

My creativity is channeled through the making drums and incense.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would jump in my truck and take them to the mountains to some of the remote locations I have discovered over the years. There are many, from wild horse ranges to desert mesas covered with sagebrush and junipers to high alpine lakes and mountains. Colorado has some amazing wild places. If you know where to go and get away from the crowds. It’s hard to beat a week of living in the fresh air and elements. There are lots of places in the city too, but the mountains would be first choice.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I give thanks to the great mystery and the ancestors for this gift of life. I give thanks to my human teachers and guides that have taken the journey of self discovery and maintained the spiritual traditions throughout time, in order to help others. Without them none of this would be possible.
