We had the good fortune of connecting with Timothy Brister and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Timothy, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?

Without a doubt, kindness. It’s so simple, yet so powerful. The adage “treat others as you would want to be treated” is something I firmly believe in and do my best to do for everyone I meet. Sadly though, that value is in very short supply these days. My parents instilled within me the necessity and deep importance of leaving people in a better way than when I found them—whatever that looks like, no matter how great or seemingly insignificant.

Everyone has their public self, their private self, and their inner self. We usually only see parts of their public self, and occasionally intersect with their private self, but we really don’t know what’s happening with their inner self. So any way in which I can bless them, be it an act of service, a kind word, or a bad dad joke, it has the potential to change things for the better. #deepthoughts

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

Well, I’m drawn to the artistic and creative side of life: film, art, design, music, writing – you name it! Creativity adds flavor to life and is so beneficial for our souls and society at large. I like to dabble in many areas and create a “coalesced mélange” of creative expression (double word score!). I know there’s always someone more mind-blowingly talented than me. Staying humble and appreciating what others have done/are doing is key to success. I’m not driven to be better than them, but am inspired by them to grow in ways I may not have considered.

Awesomesauce Creative started as a way for my wife and me to foster relationships beyond our 9-to-5 jobs. We want to create something that really matters to us, not just punching the clock for someone else. Caring for our business in a way that best represents us, and enjoying amazing long-term relationships with our clients…that’s what I think sets us apart from many typical design agencies.

As for challenges… we’ve been quite blessed
really. We do not take that for granted! Our lil’ biz grew organically from part-time gigs to full-time endeavors. We never advertised, all thanks to word-of-mouth. What do I think is our secret sauce to success? It’s having fun with our clients. We’re serious about their work but also like to laugh and celebrate life together. We’re not afraid to be funny or clever (or in my case, weird), and we are genuinely interested in their lives beyond work. That’s unexpected in the business world, and it’s much better than being a gaggle of grumpy geese!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Oh boy, where do I start? If my best friend were hanging out with me for a week, we’d make some epic memories together. Without a doubt, Meow Wolf in Denver is absolutely on top of our list. Where else can you get lost in a psychedelic otherworldly adventure like this? I describe it as a genius amalgamation of Dr. Seuss, Tim Burton, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, Blade Runner, and The Fifth Element. We’d certainly get the multi-pass (points for knowing that reference).

Since my friend is incredibly artsy herself, we’d also hit up the Denver Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art. You know, do some high-society stuff, and act all grown-up pretending to fully understand abstract art.

As for food, we would be a pinball bouncing between all the great restaurants–from burgers to tacos, bakeries to food trucks. And if we’re feeling heavy in the pocket, we’d visit some fancy-schmancy places that require pants.

I’m pretty sure my friend and I could beat any escape room in town because we’re puzzle nerds and love a good challenge. And, to glorify the 80s era, we would absolutely take a trip Fifty-Two 80s. It reminds us just how much amazing pop culture our generation gave the world.

When we’re done with the big city, we’ll pack the car and hit up Fort Collins, where the locals are merry (most likely due to our 4,861 local breweries). We’d meet old friends, make new ones, hang out, and reminisce about other adventures. It’s a great opportunity to share my appreciation and love for my friend.

We’d wrap up our nights playing games and waxing poetic about life. It’s all about celebrating our time together and creating irreplaceable memories, you know?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

Without sounding cliché, my family is the main supporting cast in my story.
My parents showed me the value of kindness and compassion. They encouraged meto pursue many different creative outlets. I had many deep and meaningful conversations with my mom about life and faith, and what it means to be a good human being. My dad was very inventive and clever. He worked very hard to provide for us. He would literally give someone the shirt off his back. He was secretly generous. He wasn’t for accolades, but it was the right thing to do. That’s an important value.

My sister has been an awesome support and friend. We can talk about anything and laugh at most everything. She shares my oddball sense of humor and always encourages me in everything I do. I’m very blessed by her.

My wife, Amanda (a.k.a. The Master of Sauce), deserves the most credit. Not only is she an amazing business partner, but she’s also my best friend and confidant. Her encouragement and support have helped drive our success. I’m the broad strokes and she is the fine details. She shares my flavor of weird, and challenges me to be better in all things.

And my Granny (still rockin’ at 94) is the best person on the planet. Her wisdom, kindness, patience, and genuine love for all is stunningly inspiring and beautiful.

Even if everything goes away tomorrow, I will have peace knowing I have experienced life with all of these wonderful people.
