We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr Nicole Dority and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr Nicole, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I was early in my career, serving in the military and then in grad school, I was a workaholic. I spent 60 hours a week working. When we had children, I still tried to work a ton and be a supermom. Work long hours, be a “perfect” mom and spouse, cook, clean, be a great friend, intense runner, and so much more. Then, as time went on, I apparently wanted to pile more on my plate, so I started taking on more side hustles and then was drawn to the world of start up. Nowadays, I focus on working more efficiently, setting boundaries, valuing joy, and enjoying the little things. Reducing the stress and intensity, The quality of my work has increased multi fold, Work is a pleasure, my family has so much fun, and I actually take care of myself. Self care and joy (as well as very healthy and kind boundaries) create a scenario for balance to work, and I manage the intensity of work well. Loving the work you do is everything. The final thing I would say is, surround yourself with wonderful people. It just helps create the ease in life, so work stops feeling like work.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Nurture is a Wellcare marketplace located here in Denver. My business partners are Peter Strauss and Kelly Campbell, two people I am honored to be on this adventure of start-up with. Start-up is always challenging, and we have had very difficult times, but we have utilized our resources, surrounded ourselves with the smartest humans in the city, and stayed the course. Creating Nurture has been a blast to do, from ideation, to construction, to creation and beyond. We have created a place that is safe for people, a “home for the whole human.” Being open during COVID-19 has been difficult, but our team has rallied to make Nurture a COVID safe environment. I am so very proud of our whole crew. Nurture is a place built on a foundation of love, community and quality. Please see www.visitnurture.com for more details. Creating Nurture, I have learned some lessons: -Keep notes, especially during significant conversations. It helps to maintain the history, if it is needed in the future. -When tensions rise, step back, ask for some space and time, and reset. This will reduce heated conflict in a fight or flight state. Relationships are everything. -Ask Questions! -Don’t Lose your voice and get small. Everyone has perspective to contribute that will help the whole team. Everyone deserves a place at the table with their team.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Pre-Covid (and post-Covid) An ideal day in Denver: Wake up and take a trail run at Green Mountain, or have a workout at Endorphin Breakfast/Brunch at Nest at Nurture or Syrup. Take a hike at St. Mary’s Alice Late Lunch from Pizzeria Locale (pizza and the meatballs) Visit REI’s flagship store and have a walk down Platte Street for a cup of coffee at Carbon and a stroll to Union Station to browse and have a drink at the Terminal Bar. Go back to the house to relax and then head for a late dinner at one of the Uncle locations Fun/Exciting Stanley Marketplace, the Source, Sloan’s Lake for a walk, run or picnic, Cherry Creek to walk around and window shop,

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to, first and foremost, celebrate my husband, Mark. He is a superhero to me. I am so grateful for him. Our children are a gift; they are my teachers and dually, celebrate our business and get involved. My business partners and colleagues at Nurture are fantastic, and a pleasure to work with. My best friend pushes me to better and further understand what unconditional love. And my other closest friends (they know who they are) are my family.
