We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah / Tom Barlow / Moseman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah / Tom, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Sarah: I would say experience over habits, but being driven and staying organized always helps!

Tom: Again, this comes back to my experience in my field. As far as habits go, even though I am co-owner of Mythmaker, I am the brewer as well. I still come in at 8am every day to get my work done and make sure there is a consistent product to sell. Over the years I’ve seen owners, or people that were promoted to higher up positions begin slacking off, taking their time, and thinking that they’ve made it. Just because you’ve started your business doesn’t mean it is time to take it easy. In fact it’s the opposite of that. Work hard. Every day. I think that’s one of the best habits to have.

What should our readers know about your business?
Tom: At Mythmaker, we focus on creating a welcoming inclusive environment and showcasing small batch beers. While there are a bunch of great breweries in Fort Collins, what I think sets us apart is the variety of beers we produce. Out of 17 taps we have just one beer that’s made year round, Delicious Compliance Hazy IPA. Every other tap is used for seasonally rotating beers, experimental beers, traditional styles, and historical beers. There is always something on tap for everyone. For instance, we will always have a straw colored easy drinking beer on tap whether it’s a Helles Lager, Pilsner, Kolsch, Blonde Ale, ect. So we run the gamut and always have a straw colored beer, pale beer, IPA, Brown beer, black beer, and seasonals but they will always be different. After working in the industry Brewing beer by hand in small batches, (15 barrels or less) it was the next step in my career to open my own taproom. I think my experience made it more easy for me to do this than others that may have not done it for so long or worked in hospitality at all. What I want the world to know about my brand is that we are regular people trying to bring a great experience to our guests. All the beers are made by me by hand personally and will continue that way. I compare it to a chef opening his own restaurant, we’re not trying to be the biggest thing in the town or region, we just want to showcase our passion.

Sarah: Other than our beer, we’ve worked really hard to have an inclusive cozy taproom as Tom mentioned! We welcome people of all walks of life, and their fur babies! We have friendly staff, seating of all kinds, and gender neutral restrooms. Our taproom is colorful and filled with house plants! We often team up with other local businesses to bring unique events to our taproom for the community to enjoy.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Tom: Most of my friends are also into beer so I would definitely devote a day to brewery hopping in Fort Collins. Some of my favorites are Zwei Brewing, Jessup Farm Barrel House, Snowbank, and Odell but I would try to get to as many as possible. I also love food so I would take them to some of my favorite spots like Music City Hot Chicken, Blue Agave, Los Comales, or Matador for Mexican food, and Tap and Handle, Choice City Butcher and Deli for beer variety and food. Other than eating and drinking I would take them up to hike Horestooth Falls or Rock and kayak on Horsetooth Reservoir. It’s also fun to end the night with a show at The Aggie or Comedy Fort. I also like to take rides up the Poudre Canyon to see the sights and its always fun to stop at The Mishawaka Amphitheater for lunch! I’d probably spend a day in Denver as well for more brewery hopping, Meow Wolf, or Denver Museum of Nature & Science. If we could make it to the Springs I would definitely feed the giraffes at The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

Sarah: Fort Collins is full of some really neat places that offer unique experiences. Some of my favorite restaurants to frequent are The 415, and Rare Italian. I love the Social as a bar to bring out of town guests, and the Steakout Saloon. If we’re looking for entertainment, The Comedy Fort is a must. Old Town Putt for some mini golf & drinks, The Mishawaka for dinner or a show, and of course Red Rocks. I usually try to take a trip up to Estes, the Stanley Hotel is always a crowd pleaser, as well as the elk!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Tom: My wife Diana, and my friend Dave who taught me how to brew.

Sarah: I had a lot of support making this dream a reality, so I guess just a shout out to everyone who believed in me, the good folks that backed our kickstarter. We had a handful of people help us build out the taproom, Rachel, Max, Andy, Jay, Ron, etc. As they say, it takes a village!
