We had the good fortune of connecting with Gemma Greenhill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gemma, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my business as there was a hole in the market – I couldn’t find what I wanted to buy, so I made it. Even prior to the pandemic I primarily worked remote. And as a result, my wardrobe became 90% workout and lounge wear. As someone who loves style, the lack of attractive but cozy options was crazy to me and it seemed like a really obvious niche. I have degrees in textile and fashion design, so in early 2020 I dusted off my old sewing skills and began to play with a few different sample style ideas I had in mind – different versions of open front fleece jackets with patchwork and appliqued details on their backs. A fleece that I could throw over a blouse or t-shirt where I looked put together, felt comfortable and more like myself than in something by an outdoorsy or super sporty brand.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve learned along the way that you never actually know ANYTHING! You can learn from a situation in business, but how you approach, or overcome similar future situations is usually totally different each time. You have to be reactive, adaptable and open to constant change.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to every single one of my customers. I am grateful for each and every person who choses to support small business – mine or those run by others, helping keep the world a richer, more interesting and diverse place.
