Meet John Wessel | Farmer and Ag Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with John Wessel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I always knew I wanted to start my own business and be self-employed. Self-employment has always been the great motivator for me because i am a very competitive person. There is no feeling like starting your own venture and knowing that the success of that venture is going to solely rely on my efforts and decisions. There can be great cost in that but also great reward. Being self-reliant and self-motivated bring me great pride as well.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are a diversified farming operation located in Northeast Iowa that produces corn, soybeans, alfalfa and raise and sell seedstock Angus Genetics. We are proud of our operation and the way it has matured and evolved in the last 20 years, we started from scratch as it relates to agriculture. My parents had a small farm and they worked away from the farm for their main sources of income. My wife and I started a family and decided this is the life we wanted to lead and the way we wanted to raise our kids. When we made that decision, we decided to pour our heart and souls into it. Anything that is good is never easy and this venture was no exception. There were challenges at every turn from financial to weather and beyond all at the same time starting a family and raising three kids including one with childhood cancer. We prayed a lot and relied on each other, but we never took our eye off of our goal and what is what going to take to achieve it.
We sought advice and counsel from successful people and learned from their experiences hoping to model some of the successes they had in their particular business.
I want the world to know that we are proof positive that anything is possible with hard work, faith in God and determination.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Northwest Montana near Glacier. Great scenery, great food, great people.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
