We had the good fortune of connecting with Sulema Sanchez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sulema, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking is a huge deal when it comes to your own business because it’s about making decisions you don’t know that will work, like investing or creating something new. In order to be able to move forward with your business you have to be able to leave your fears on the side and just go for what ever it is you want to accomplish. There has been ocasiones where I want to create a new design and that I know many people in my area don’t do. It scared me that if it doesn’t come out how I expected I will let so many people and myself down, but because I have taken some risks I have come up with such beautiful cakes and at the end I’m just amazed of what I can actually do and that motivates me more to keep on growing. Investing is also a big deal not everyone has the money to invest in something that “might” help your business, believe me some cake supplies aren’t cheap.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Every time I get an inquiry on a cake I have never made before I get super excited and look forward for the due date. I love that I feel so passionate with what I do and I especially love seeing the outcome, sometimes I can’t even believe what I am capable of. When I was younger I hated arts, crafts and building stuff in school because I didn’t like what I would create, I would always wish to have the ability of others, but when the pandemic started I wanted to start a business and I wasn’t sure what it would be, so all of the sudden while scrolling through instagram and tiktok a whole bunch of cake decorating tutorials would pop up, and I thought to my self “This looks easy” “I can do that” so I started and boy it wasn’t easy, after so much practice and failed recipes I finally got the hang of it by just watching YouTube videos. I always make sure to add my personal touch to the work, I love new challenges and do my best to overcome them. I have learned to be patient and to not rush things because this takes time and dedication and best of all LOVE. I want the world to see me and recognize me for my work, I want them to know the love I pour out while making cakes and that if you ever order from me you will come back and fall in love with my art.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I haven’t explored Colorado like I would want to but there are a few things I would like to show my friends around. There is this Mexican restaurant I went to recently and let me tell you I LOVED IT. It’s called Necios and its near downtown the drinks there are amazing and perfect for a girls day out. There is also my favorite taco place which is in Aurora and its called Tacos primo and let me tell you those tacos are really good and they have a nice little outdoor place to sit and enjoy your food, to go party I really like view house they have a patio where you can just dance, hang with friends and ask for drinks at the bar, the music there is really good it’s impossible to not have fun. There are really nice hikes all over Colorado some even 30min away from Denver so you won’t have to drive too far into the mountains. One of my favorites is Red rocks, it has trails and you also get a good view of all Denver, and of course I would introduce my friends to my favorite small business owners and I would love for them to support. You can’t finish exploring Colorado in a week, there are plenty of hidden gems all over and I would love to discover them soon.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank my husband for always being there for me since day one, Always cheering me on and making sure I know my worth, even though he sometimes has to pull through my meltdowns with me. Thanks babe you are the best husband ever.
To my family, Friends and customers, because of you I wouldn’t be where I am at today, Thank you for always having faith in me and for all the new friendships this business has brought me,
