We had the good fortune of connecting with Janelle Tejan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janelle, what is the most important factor behind your success?
To me the most important factor behind my success is consistent and being true to myself in everything I do. Making sure I fully enjoy what I am creating with others. I have been modeling for almost five years now and the journey to get where I am now has been a lot to take in. I always try to fix myself or make myself better than yesterday. I practice posing a lot in the mirror from my hands to my face and body positions. I workout every morning for about ten minutes to just get my blood going. Staying consistent in how you take care of yourself plays a huge role in your success. Mental health is a huge part of my success and making sure I stay leveled and assist to myself when needed. Taking care of what my body or mind may be telling me at that moment. The success to my brand is consistent with who I work with. I enjoy building a Repor with people. And being able to get referrals. I love the minds of others and how their ideas can make something amazing for the entire team I may be on set with that day. There has been times I was unsure of my path but even in doubt I knew modeling is who I am it’s who I will always be. I’m so much more than a model and staying true to THAT is what has helped me be so successful with my career choice.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am also a makeup artist. I have always been in love with the idea of becoming more than what meets the eyes. So I think this is why I have an obsession with wigs and bright colors. I love doing makeup. I have a signature eye shape I do when using eyeshadows to my lids. I went to school to be a full time cosmetologist for about two years and got my certificate in business and management. Once I graduated I decided I wanted to work for myself I chose to start doing makeup on people in my free time. My rates are not high and I do believe in working with people to achieve greatness so I have always been someone that wants everyone to be happy. This filed of being a cosmetologist gave me that. Nothing is greater than making other people feel and look beautiful. You could say I am also a beauty influencer because once I left school I stared my own makeup page showcasing all I can do on me. It wasn’t easy and every look I created want perfect but practica makes perfect and once you get comfortable with your art and creating as different as you want, your truly unstoppable. This year I have been making sure to continue showcasing all I can do but now on more models and clients. I want people in my city to see what I can do and use me for whatever they need. Wheater it means modeling for you on set and then maybe doing makeup for you and your models on set. The best part of me and my makeup and me as a brand is that I am always evolving so therefore my art is as well. That’s the true beauty of being a creator to me. Is that you are always evolving.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Crazy that you ask this question because well my BESTFRIEND since elementary school is moving to Japan for three years. To be honest I don’t really know what it’s like to live without her. She has been in my life since I was a little girl and we have been by each other’s side like GLUE ever since. Alejandro Garcia Romero is her name she is in the Air Force and I couldn’t be more proud of her. Before she left I spent the entire weekend with her. I’m the kind of friend that like to spoil people. If I was rich everyone I know would be debt free, new car, new homes, and take us all on a trip 😌 one day……. but I just spoiled her. Everything from food to getting our nails did, to going shopping and we even painted our own vases. I wanted to show her a good time since she’ll be gone for a long time….. and I wanted her stress free for once. And she was. I wanted to pamper her before she left and I got to. We agreed that every month when she gets there I start sending her care packages from America so she can still always have a piece of home with her. All In all this is like my sister. I would do anything for her. Life is a beautiful journey for her and I am blessed to be her BESTFRIEND truly.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I do want to take the time to shoutout just a few people who in my opinion have molded me and helped me become all that I am today. Any John’s. Is a well know photographer based in the Denver metro area. He was literally the first photographer who took a chance on me as a model and a creator with my ideas to start building my portfolio for modeling all those years ago. He was such a great guide. He helped me make certain decisions and always informed me on how to be better at my posing or walking. I spent alot of time creating in his old studio when I first started all this and for that I am forever grateful. Another person I wanna shoutout is marnee Padilla she is not only someone who has Legit helped me but she become my mentor about two years ago. She has always been someone I can fall back on and when I was taking out of state trips to New York she invested me financially. She has always been someone who is not just a mentor But like a mother to me. There is so many people I can list for you and express the deep love I have for them and how far they have help me get. A few model who have helped me see it through and encourage me to never give up is The model GG. Alicia Myers. Rikki Grant. These are not just my model friends but more like family and sisters. These women in their own individual ways have helped me with so much. We have had some pretty crazy nights back stage at fashion shows. The experience of being a black model in Denver is that you GO THROUGH some things and it’s always nice to have fellow models there who understand what you feel and are going through. I forsure will open up more about what it’s like to be a black model I’m Denver Colorado.
