We had the good fortune of connecting with Ty Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ty, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks has played an extremely big role in my life and career these past few years! In 2019, I decided to quit my corporate job of 5 plus years to chase my dream of being an airline pilot. After graduating flight school in under a year during Covid and instructing for a few months, the realization hit me hard that flying planes was not my passion. I put myself into a ton of debt that I will be paying for 20 more years all for a passion I thought I had. Do I regret it? Not at all. I had to get an iPad for flight school, and that iPad allowed me to get back into playing and recording music- my true passion. I still write and record on that same iPad to this day, and I ended up taking another risk by moving halfway across the country (Atlanta to Denver) to chase my dream of being a musician! Risks get you out of your comfort zone, and they have helped me get clarity on a lot of things. Have a dream? Always chase it! Even if there is risk involved, what’s the worst that could happen? Life is short, and I think it is extremely important to find what makes you happiest and do everything that you can to make a career out of it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In 2022, I started the reggae band Kedron Asphalt Palace with a childhood friend in Atlanta, Georgia. We had talked about recording an album for years and years, but I was more concerned with hitting the bottle than the recording studio. After getting sober and having access to the iPad from flight school, I started putting all my energy into creating reggae music. After a few EPs to test the waters on releasing music, we ended up putting out an album that we always wanted to make together called “The Island” in December of 2022. We attempted to find people to jam with in Atlanta to be able to play live shows, but the reggae scene in Atlanta is pretty small which made it tough to find people who wanted to play reggae with us. I knew that I would have to be in a different city to stand a chance of growing as a reggae band, so I decided to relocate the band from Atlanta to Denver. I have been in this amazing city for around 7 months now, and I have jammed reggae music with more people in these 7 months than my whole life. I have found a solid group of people to play shows with (we have 4 coming up!), and we are working on our second full-length album! It feels surreal to see the growth that I’ve seen these past few years, and music inspires me every single day to create something new instead of waste my life away to alcohol.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I recently got fined $150 for bringing my drum set to Red Rocks to prepare for an upcoming show since I live in an apartment, so I think we would for sure have to go back when a concert is happening and without a drum set. Nothing beats a show at Red Rocks, and they have amazing frozen non-alcoholic pina coladas! Meow Wolf is always a fun and unique experience, and I really love all the art and creativity seen throughout the city! In terms of food, we would have to get some subs at Cheba Hut and some wings from G-Que BBQ! And having the option for a day trip into the mountains during any season feels incredible! Some disc golf and hiking in the summer, and some snowboarding in the winter! Hope we can make this weekend happen soon!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am forever grateful for every single person that has ever shown me and our band support! If you are reading this, you are an awesome supporter and deserve a shoutout! We put a lot of time into recording, composing, writing lyrics, creating album art, shooting social media content, etc, so it truly means the world when a song resonates with someone! I am a recovering alcoholic (almost 2 and a half years sober from alcohol!), so I write a lot of the struggles that I have had into lyrics in hopes that it can help people that have gone through a similar situation. Music is what truly brought me out of my dark hole, so I hope it can help do the same for someone else. Can’t thank every single one of you enough for taking time out of your day to show us support!
