We had the good fortune of connecting with Timmy Burke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Timmy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I’m a firm believer that taking risks is essential for personal growth. Outside of your comfort zone is where real growth happens. DJing for strangers always puts me in that uncomfortable zone, but I thrive on the growth that comes with it.
Learning to DJ and putting myself out there wasn’t easy. I still have a lot to learn, but the incredible support I’ve received from the DJ community and friends here in Denver, who share my love of music, has been invaluable. I owe a lot of my progress to their continued encouragement and guidance.
I’ve always been drawn to opportunities for growth and self-improvement. One big leap was moving away from my family and my hometown of Hilo, Hawai’i, to pursue a business degree in Silicon Valley on a football scholarship. When my football program got cut after my first year, I decided to pivot from athletics and fully shift my focus to academics and other extracurriculars. One project I’m particularly proud of is co-founding a sustainability initiative that raised over $15,000 for social equity causes and delivering excess cafeteria food to shelters.
Taking risks has led to significant milestones in my life. After graduating with a degree in accounting, I obtained my CPA, transitioned into venture capital auditing, and made the move to Denver, where I bought a home at 25, just two days after arriving to town, are all examples of risks that have paid off. Each risk has taught me valuable lessons and propelled me forward on my journey of growth and self-discovery.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of my true passions is spreading positivity in people’s lives. The world can be tough, so I make it a mission to bring smiles and laughter wherever I can because you never know what someone might be going through. This is what we Hawaiians call “spreading the aloha!” I have a few ways I go about it.
First off, I use my personal social media platforms to create funny Hawaiian content that resonates with locals, visitors, or anyone interested in Hawaiian culture.
Then, on my DJ social media, I inject humor into my content to keep things lively and hopefully brighten someone’s day through jokes and music!
When I’m performing live, I pour my heart into my song selection, feeding off the energy of the crowd and making sure they’re having the time of their lives. Interacting with the audience is key; after all, they’ve made the effort to come out and spend their night with me, so they deserve a great show.
Seeing people having a blast is what it’s all about for me. I believe in putting out the same positive energy I hope to receive, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see that energy come full circle.
