We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Marxx and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Spite. I have had plenty of doubters in my life, thought I would never amount to anything, and the more I go down the path of success, the more rewarding I find it is to prove them wrong.
I know spite may be traditionally viewed as a negative emotion, when harnessed in a constructive manner, it can be a powerful force for personal growth and positive change. So, I embrace the doubters, use their skepticism as fuel, and prove them wrong in the best possible way -by achieving my dreams. I hope they eat that.
Didn’t think I could be a Tattoo Artist? Move across the country? Travel? Watch this.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Getting to where I am today was not easy. I went through two different apprenticeships and worked at night. I was there at the shop every morning cleaning, answering phones, setting up appointments, getting everyone’s food trying my best not to f*** anything up. Then immediately leaving, going to my second job until the early morning. Then starting everything all over again.
Whenever I started to actually tattoo skin, it was definitely defeating. I was constantly comparing myself to other artists. I zoomed in on every single flaw and was overthinking every design I did. I feel like that pressure helped me a lot. I wanted me to be better, to push my skills further and become better than who I was yesterday.
The things I have learned about being in the industry is that this is a journey of continuous learning and improvement. Each tattoo I do I learn from both successes and mistakes, and you just have to keep moving forward.
Recently I’ve been really stoked on doing tattoos of teeth. It’s been my logo for awhile now and I started to really incorporate into my tattoo work. I have been absolutely loving that. When I first moved to colorado, I was a color artist. It’s been really interesting to see how much my work has changed, and how different it was then til now. I just love seeing my skills progress.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a hard question because I am so down for anything! When I first came to Colorado, I went to Sloan’s Lake almost everyday and drew there so that would definitely be on top of the list. I’m usually working or out traveling, so its hard to say. I will say I’m a more take everything day by day when I’m home. Maybe go to the mountains, go to a few casinos, and go on plenty of walks/picnics.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Amanda Stampfly- She was my mentor in my 2nd apprenticeship. I was very fortunate to have her teach me. She was very hands on- and taught me the basics of tattooing well. We still talk, and I find that very fortunate because a lot of artists I have talked to, don’t have that kind of relationship with their mentors. I love that gal.
